New to The Knot!

Hi Everyone,I am newly engaged! All of a month, now.  I am so excited. We have set a tentative date of Dec. 11 of next year. It seems so far away. My fiancé is finishing up his 4th year at West Point and we plan to marry in the Austin area after he graduates and he can take leave for the Christmas holidays. The date could change but the place won't. All of our friends and family are in Austin. I will be doing our wedding planning from long distance. I see a few posts that many people are using the board for long distance planning. Chris proposed to me on "ring weekend" at West Point. It was magical and much unexpected.  I currently live in New Jersey and commute to NYC three days a week for work. I can't imagine how I will get all this done and looking to the Austin Knotties for recommendations.  I also hear there is a website with favorite vendors - if someone could post that - Thanks!Kelly

Hi Kelly --Welcome to the Austin Board.  It was such a help when I planned my wedding in 2006.How many guests do you plan to invite?  That will impact your venue choices. If you can schedule a trip to Austin for a few days, you could get a lot of vendors done.  Also, the Bridal Extravaganza in early January is a major show.  We attended and lined up many vendors then (plus got in on vendors offering discounts at the show). Where in NJ do you live?  My DH is from Westwood, NJ about 45 minutes outside of NYC.Happy Wedding Planning !!

I live in Rutherford. I am a nurse anesthesiologist and work in surgery on Tuesday and Thursdays in the city and "most" of the time on Wednesdays. The commute gets tiring but I have friends that I can stay with in NYC or in the hospital. We won't know where Chris will get stationed - so I will stay here working until the wedding.  Don't think this will be a huge wedding - probably 100-125.  Since it is Dec. I think I want an inside reception. All the guys will either be in West Point or Army uniforms and we will have a saber arch, so I am thinking I want to use a church for that. Looking for suggestions!  I like Vintage Villa's at least how it looks on the internet.

Kelly --Check out the Caswell House.  It can easily accommodate your guest count.  It's decorated for the holidays & is simply beautiful that time of year.  (I had originally planned a Christmas wedding, but later moved it to May.)www.caswellhouse.orgRutherford isn't too far away from where my DH is from.
