Insurance

Our reception will be at a hall for rent. We're looking into hiring bartenders, and they're asking about insurance. Is this something I'm supposed to have? Where do you get it? How much does it cost? I just thought it was the bartender's responsibility not to over-serve.

Re: Insurance

  • Your hall might have some more information.  It's likely you're not the first reception to run into this issue.  Ask them if they know who you should talk to about it.

  • It may depend on your state. I live in Michigan and we had to have a certified Bar service, they were insured so all liability would have been their responsibility. If they are not insured I would look around for one that is.
  • We're required to have liability insurance for our wedding.  You can often add it to your homeowners insurance.
  • We were not required to get the insurance.  But we did anyway.  We just added to my parents homeowners policy for very little money.  Even if they venue has libility insurance does not stop people from suing you also. My parents wanted they extra coverage.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
