Spray Tans

I'm getting married in just over two weeks (insert random panicked noise here) and recently started contemplating getting a spray tan. I have very pale skin, and after years of hitting the tanning bed in my teens, I've been warned by my dermatologist to stay away from them. My only experience with spray tanning is when I got one for spring break back in 2004. I turned orange and it bled all over my clothes. Not a good look.  I'd really like to get a little color (just enough so I don't look like Casper), but I don't want to end up orange or ruining my wedding dress. Basically, have spray on tans improved in the last 8 years? Is what I'm looking for possible? Any thoughts on how to find a good spray tanning place in a short time frame?

Thanks!

Re: Spray Tans

  • They really are better. I'd check on Yelp and read reviews- I'd look for the kind where someone airbrushes you vs. the booth type that just lets loose the spray, which you then rub in (I've had good results from that kind a couple of times but I've used bottled self-tanner a lot and I've got the application thing down pretty well- it can end up streaky or blotchy if you miss spots).

Get one this week if you can, to test it. If you're getting married Saturday, I'd say get it Thursday, so none of the bronzer will still be around after 2 showers (they usually use a combo bronzer/self-tanner. Exfoliate the bejeezus out of everything (esp. elbows, knees) for a few days before you go. I'm getting a spa exfoliation treatment the day before (partly for pampering, but partly so the tan will take nicely). Ask for the lightest color, too! I'm very pale as well, it doesn't take much to make me look way more tan than I've ever naturally been! ;)

Yes, they have improved since 2004, I got one (VersaSpa) the Thursday before my Saturday wedding.

However, they do take some practice and you'll want to judge the color so I also advise doing a trial.

I also do not get the bronzer.  I ask for "medium, clear" which means they spray only the self tanner so you are not tan when you leave the salon, the tan develops over the next few hours.  However, it is the bronzer that rubs off on your clothes, sheets, etc., so I never have that problem.
  • Thanks! This is really helpful.
  • You could also try the spray leg makeup (test it first) which is basically a long lasting foundation that mists on for even coverage...this depends of course on what you're wearing if you are worried about transfer. My mom's friend uses it on her legs when she wears skirts in the summer, and you can't tell at all that it is makeup and she says it doesnt run.
