Not Engaged Yet

Have you tried something new lately?

I finally went back to the gym for the first time in about a month and have gotten back to eating right this week too! Given that i'm recently engaged...i'm pretty motivated right now I guess. I really want to try some new things and get more active this summer. Not just to lose weight, but to become more well rounded and healthy.

This morning there was a groupon for a local hot yoga studio. It's super close to my house, and although I love yoga...i've never been brave enough to try hot yoga. It ended up coming to $2.90 a class for the deal, so I bought it! My first class will be this Sunday and I'm super excited.

I'm also thinking about purchasing a bicycle this spring. I'm not new to cycling, but I haven't had a bike since before college. There are tons of trails and parks close to my house, so I know I could put it to good use! Plus, my company reimburses each employee for $150 of fitness-related expenses each year...so I figure I can afford a decent bike with that.

So I just thought maybe i'd put this out to the board this morning. Have you tried anything new lately? A new food, a new hobby, a new activity? Is there something that's been on your mind that you might like to try? With spring just ramping up, i'm feeling the need to embrace change and start fresh...

Re: Have you tried something new lately?

  • My mom and I are starting a 12 week bootcamp on Tuesday. It was a Groupon that I got for $9.99, cannot get better than that since normally its $144 for the 12 weeks.

  • I started the TRX training regimen. It's pretty intense so far, but I like it. I just need to keep at it (which is easier said than done)

I'm also doing a little better at coming around here more often :) That's not new, but it's new as of late.

AND I have an interview Wednesday! My company is closing and I'm trying to transfer to another one in a nearby town. I was so excited the director called, I can't tell you :) It's my second job so I was a bit worried about not having the extra income.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • I'm trying BOSU this afternoon. Hot yoga is awesome -- I go every Friday.

  • I started the Couch to 5k program this week so thats new on the work out front. I signed up for a 5k in 9 weeks, so I should be all set. It actually starts at the top of my street and goes throught the city, then ends with a huge block party/ street fair with a beer garden and live music.

  • I just got a new mountain bike so I could ride trails that my cruiser couldn't handle. I looked at a ton, so let me know if you want to discuss bikes! I bought a new handlebar stem and bike computer to try out this weekend. It'll be nice to know how far I'm riding (though I expect it's not that far).

My sister and I are signing up for & starting Zumba classes on Monday! That is, if they still have it since it's a holiday. The classes meet every Monday & Wednesday from 7-8, and Saturday mornings 8-9. I'm really excited, and I think it will be an awesome work out to add to just going to the gym.

Jon told me to make sure I wear two sports bras so that I don't knock anyone out :/
  • Csousa - "Jon told me to make sure I wear two sports bras so that I don't knock anyone out :/ " - This cracked me up!!! Sometimes I feel that way myself. hehe.

Leia - I'd love your recommendations. I was looking at a Schwinn mountain bike online...It's only $149 on sale at Walmart and seemed to be a good deal. I don't need anything impressive, but I want my purchase to last. What do you think? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Schwinn-Sidewinder-26-Ladies-Mountain-Bike/16913453

Lennon - as always, i'm impressed. Let us know how your race goes!

Stillwell - BOSU is awesome. Thanks for the positive testimony on the hot yoga...it's good to hear that others enjoy it!

Blue - WOOHOO on your interview! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!

Stina - I hope your bootcamp is awesome. I love groupon deals!!

Nothing new yet since I haven't had the time. I would like to start working out again. There is a ballet studio not too far from where I live and the adult ballet classes are donation based. I might give that a try.

  • Last weekend MotoLyn organized an awesome SUP (StandUp Paddling) session on a lake not to far from my house. I loved it SO much that I'm going after work today.

Also, some of my co-workers and I are trying to put together an 8-12 week cross-fit program at our student rec center. It's literally 100 yards from our building, so it would be a great motivator. I've never done Cross-fit before but I'm excited to try it.

Nothing new on my end, I'm still dabbling in the same activities and food stuffs. But I want ti say great job on your motivation. Hot yoga is awesome, I did it for a while and realized that I couldn't handle being that warm. I did try pole fitness and I would have loved to continue but it was so expensive. Something very empowering about being able to spin and work a pole. Yeah sounds bad but its oh so good.
  • I am moving to another country and trying a new language. I am so nervous! Lol What is Hot yoga?

How long are you planning to be there? I think being there will help you learn the language. That is exciting!

  • I spackeled a wall for the first time last week, so that was new. In the Bahamas in March I went Snorkeling for the first time and I loved it!!!! I can't wait to do it again. I also played blackjack for the first time in a casino in the Bahamas, I did pretty well. I usually just played slot machines.

I want to learn how to cook meat stuffs for when the BF & I move in together so I can cook meals for him. I've never cooked meat before, so it will be a huge challenge with a lot to learn....

  • Yesterday I tried tofurkey for the first time. Well it was sausages made by the tofurkey brand. I've been a vegetarian for over 6 years and I finally got around to them. They were delish!

Ravenray - German was my minor in college and I really wish I would have done some sort of study abroad with it. Since I graduated 4 years ago, I feel like I've forgotten so much of the language. I'm sure you'll be fine!

I love their sausages. I made one of my favorite recipes with them on Monday.
    2 veggie sausage links
    3 med- small potatoes
    1 large apples

fry up sausge with 3 tablespoons of butter, then add apples and potato cut up, add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 3 teaspoons of sugar. It is sooo good and so easy.

Just though I would share.

I eat way more fake meat products than I should. BF is not a vegetarian, but he likes the fake meat, so that is what we eat. So I don't make a lot of recipes. With the weather being nice we've been grilling as much as possible, so lots of veggie burgers!

Have you ever tried the light life smart bacon? We use it to make BLTs and we add avocado to them. Avocado on a BLT is the best thing ever! Meat eaters are welcome to try this too Smile

That should do well if you're not going to do crazy hills or anything. Those look like the same kind of twist shifters as my old bike, and I liked them other than one gear being a little out of alignment. I recommend trying the bike out in a store if you can. Different manufacturers have different distances from the seat and handlebars, so some may fit more comfortably than others. You can also customize pieces, as needed. I bought a new handlebar stem to get my handlebars a little higher. The beauty of Walmart is that you can return it if it doesn't work for you.

The problem I found with bikes is that there's a sub-$200 market and a $400+ market. There's little inbetween. I ended up getting a $400 Diamondback Lux Trail from REI. That gives you a lighter weight frame, disc brakes, an adjustable fork, and higher-end shifters. I didn't really want to spend that much, but I decided I liked disc brakes, which have better stopping power than V-brakes. $400 was the minimum to get disc brakes.
  • I started the Insanity workout Monday and it's kicking my ass! I'm so sore but I like it because I know my muscles are finally working. I'm hoping to keep motivated so I can see some results.

  • I'm thinking of joining a food co-op when I get back to St. Louis. I'd also love to do some more things to connect with my Polish heritage -- chief among them learning to speak Polish.

And I kind of want to start running (& get SO to start running again -- he ran track in high school). Any runners here? Any tips for a beginning runner who's in abominable shape?

  • I've been eating heathier. I'm a snacker so I'm keeping fresh fruit and veggies around instead of sweets. Also trying to keep it down to one cup of coffee a day as well as getting enough sleep. I'd love to start a fittness program but my travels should be over in a few days so after I get moved into my new appartment, which I have yet to find, I'll start looking into that. I've always wanted to try boxing though....
