SUNDAY WEDDINGS.. Help?

I'm having a Sunday wedding that will probably end at 4 or 5pm. Should I expect guests to arrive on Friday or Saturday? Will they leave Sunday or do people take Monday off and leave Monday morning? I'm having trouble trying to figure out the hotel block situation. Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

Re: SUNDAY WEDDINGS.. Help?

  • I had a Sunday wedding, ended at 5:00. People arrived Saturday night and left Sunday right after the wedding. Even some of the bridal party left at 4:30/5:00. No one stayed until Monday and no one arrived Saturday except for two bridesmaids. We had a party at a local pizza place on Saturday night for 4 hours, so people could just show up as they go into town.
  • **no one arrive FRIDAY except for two bridesmaids
  • You can block FRI, SAT, and SUN nights, and guests can choose when they want to arrive/depart.  Blocking rooms (shouldn't) cost you anything.

  • Check with the hotels though because I talked to a few that said if less than 80% of the rooms I blocked were booked, than I had to pay the rest. Basically, at least 80% had to be booked or I was footed the bill.
  • Good to know. So guests had no problem getting to Providence airport for their flights after the wedding? How do they change out of dresses etc before going to the airport?Where was your pizza party? We're thinking of doing the same thing!
  • Nevermind about the providence airport, or the pizza location. that question only goes for RI knotties!
  • I don't live in Providence. I live in California. You're on an international board.
  • Yeah, check with the hotels.  The way that most blocks work is that they hold a block of rooms at a special rate, and guests have a specific amount of time to reserve rooms under that block.  After that, the rooms are released from the block and go back up for "sale" at the regular prices.

  • When is a good time to reserve hotel blocks? (How long before or after the save the dates are sent out)
  • Block your hotels in time for STDs to go out, if that info will be available to your guests. Check with Hilton hotels. They don't have the attrition (sp?) (the 80% of you pay thing) clauses from what I've discovered.

  • If I were invited to a Sunday wedding, I would probably arrive right before and leave right afterwards if I lived locally. If I had traveled a good distance to it, I would probably arrive Saturday night and leave right after on Sunday or very early Monday morning (depending on the driving/flying distance.)

  • In June you will most likely be stuck with a two, if not three day minimum.LOVE Glen Manor, one of my  cousins & his first wife were live in caretakers there.  Many moons ago.Half of my family is in Newport and for the family reunion last year some stayed at the HoJos in Middletown.  No negative reports but it was just renovated.Otherwise, the huge place on the left just after you come off the bridge, going towards Middletown. Don't think they had a minimun.Viking is fab but has 3 night minimums
  • I am actually a Sales Manager for Marriott and I can answer any questions you might have about room blocks. Two years ago, most hotels were charging attrition...with the current economy, you can pretty much negotiate to not have it with any hotel. As far as blocking rooms, all you have to do is tell the Sales Manager what the PEAK nights will be (the night of the wedding for sure, night before if it is an earlier wedding) and we pretty much make a bell graph to decide how many to block off the day before and after. All of these can be adjusted in the months leading up to your wedding based on pick-up.Like tidetravel said, most will not charge, but will release rooms 30-60 days out that have not been booked in order to allow the hotel to sell them with a reasonable amount of time.

  • Imills, the Newport Marriot has a 2 night minimum, 3 nights in season
  • Wow they must be a busy one! I would try checking one of the select service hotels...Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt Place, Hilton Garden Inn...these typically don't have minimums. But again, that could differ by location.
