Help-protecting taper candles from wind? Glass sleeve type thing?

We are having our ceremony in a gazebo and there will be a unity candle. How can we protect the taper flames from wind before they are used? We are lighting them when the mothers are seated so they will be lit for about 10 minutes, I'd say. I have something I think will work for the larger Christ candle. I looked in AC Moore, Christmas Tree Shops, and some other places but can't find what I think are glass 'sleeves' that fit over the tapers! Anyone know where I can get these in under 2 weeks? Anything that would work would be okay with us! Thanks! Skye

hmm not sure.  I saw cylinder vases at dollar tree and you can order online and I don't think they take long to come in and can pick up at store.  Only thing is they are only 6 inches, so would have to cut down the taper at the bottom.  I thought this would be pretty if you use any old candle and then wrap the cylinder with lace, as an alternative http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/good-things/lacy-candle-centerpiece?&backto=true&backtourl=/diy-decorations?&contentid=0f02051f28010210VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD#slide_12

Those are really pretty! I'm not even picky about them being that nice, but I love them. I couldn't find any cylinders at Dollar Tree, just vases that won't work because they need to be open at the bottom(otherwise you can't pick up the candle to touch the flame to the other candle). So far, I spent more than I wanted to and got some that are huge and the wrong shape-but I think they will do the job. I'd much prefer something narrow-now we have to use a larger table to fit all the glass. Skye

oh I see, you are looking for hurricane vases with the open bottom.  Necessity is the mother of invention so I'm sure you'll find something to work with it.  Save on crafts had some but they are $8 each and then they have to ship.  Or if you have a free saturday morning, could drive around to some yard sales.  Check the local paper for "glassware" when looking for yard sales.  I would probably just ask close friends and family if they had some hurricane vase that you could use as your "something borrowed" item :) as long as they aren't too attached to it.

Thanks-the wedding is in only 11 days and I've asked people if they have any-no one has heard of them! I called them hurricanes, chimneys, sleeves, you name it. These big ones will work, they're just overkill in a number of ways and don't look that good. Still hoping to find narrow ones in time!

Maybe if you find a cylinder that you like, you could take it to a local glass store, someplace that even does auto glass or table top glass.  I bet they would have glass cutters and could cut off the bottom for you so that it is a sleeve?  I know, it's a stretch, just brainstorming with you :)

Also, you can post an item wanted ad for free in the valley breeze newspaper online, probably even on here.
