Any veil compromise suggestions?

My mom has a vision of one of her daughters wearing a elbow length veil. Since my sister was already married without one, clearly it has fallen to me :-P. The only veil I would consider wearing would be a bird cage type veil, very retro, the style she hates. Any suggestions for compromise? TIA!

Re: Any veil compromise suggestions?

  • Explain that the elbow length is not your style and wear the birdcage. It's your wedding.
  • Get a cheapo one and have a nice bridal portrait taken with it, buy a print and put it in a nice frame for your mom as a gift. Then wear the birdcage that YOU want for the actual wedding.

  • ooh, that's a good idea!
  • I don't want to wear a veil, period. I've selected a pretty detailed updo for my hair, and I don't want it to be covered up the whole day. When I suggested this at the bridal boutique, the sales girl freaked and said that I would really regret not wearing one. Anyone else have any insight?
  • I really like the idea PP had of taking a formal portrait with the veil and then not wearing one/wearing the one I want :)
  • jsho50: Salesgirl is just trying to sell you more overpriced merchandise. If you don't want to wear one, don't wear one!
  • I'm personally thinking about a cathedral for the ceremony/pics, and a birdcage for the reception. Tell you mom that too long a veil will get in the way of your dancing and eating and socializing. :)
  • Hi lizzie! Actually, I don't care too much for veils myself, but the compromise I've made is a single tiered veil that attached BELOW my updo, so it's like a clean line going down my neck and back verses really covering any of my hair and/or face. Whatever you decide, make sure that you will be happy! I would like to point out, though, that while many people will say "if you like it, do it," and normally I agree, if your mother truly HATES something, and if you think it will make your wedding day miserable because she will be complaining about it, avoid it. If your mother would be happier with your not having any veil than a birdcage veil, you might offer that up as a compromise. Good luck! Manda
