DC DJ price comparisons

My fiance and I were pretty set on an associate DJ from a top rated DJ service (Chris Laich Music Services) until we found out that he charges $2000 plus $250 for additional speakers since it'll be in an atrium. While I know this DJ will do an amazing job (I've spoken with several references), the price still seems a little high.  I spoke to another DJ who said he charges $1400 "minimum" but I don't think he's familiar with the venue and that makes me nervous. Is this how much DJ's always charge for a DC wedding? Any feedback would be helpful...thanks!

Even though I havn't started lookiing for DJ's yet, that price seems really high. A DJ can go anywhere as long as he has the equipment so if the other DJ isn't familiar with the venue, take him to do a walk through or suggest your first meeting takes place at the venue. Keep search around. There's a post on here about DJs so read it and see if you get any good leads. Good luck and happy planning.

I didn't find any DJ's that charged that much...most that I researched were between 900 and 1200. My guy (Frank Young), is 1200ish, but that's for 2 venues (ceremony and reception, so it's 2 sets of equipment and extra setup) and about 6 hours total.

That seems very high....we are using a DJ based in Baltimore, but from my DC research the prices seem to be more around the $1000 mark.

That seems REALLY high. I'm paying $300 but most of the DJ's I spoke to were $600-$800

Those are both really high. I shopped around a bit, and the prices I got were 700-1200. We ended up going with Kirkabee's. They were on the lower end of that range and I am so excited to have Kirk DJ at our wedding - we've heard nothing but good things and have been really impressed both times we've met with him.

Kirk from Kirkabee's was $850 for 4 hours for our June 7 wedding.  He is wonderful.  See review in my bio.  My husband had talked to Chris Laich and he sounds professional and into his equipment but we clicked with Kirk and felt no need to spend the extra money since Kirk came SO highly reviewed.

That seems high. $1K seems to be more of the norm. I'd look in to Kirk from Kirkabees. He's super nice, not cheesy and seemed willing to work with whatever style I wanted. He's very popular on this board so you'll definitely get a lot of references. Also, I'd recommend the DJ we decided to go with DJ lil e she's DJs at a few clubs in DC. We met her and totally clicked. I was looking for something other the the tragically unhip cheesy white male in a tux and she is definitely none of those.

Not being familiar with the venue should not be an issue with a professional DJ. Any DJ worth his/her salt will be able to either check out the venue in advance or speak to the on-site events manager and figure out exactly what equipment will be needed to ensure top-notch sound quality.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.  It's been tremendously helpful.  We've decided to look at DJs for half the price and have found a lot of great options (included some you've recommended!).Thanks again!
