NWR: Birth Control Question

I hope this isn't TMI.So, I know that you can skip the week of placebo pills and skip your period all together.  The last time I did that, my body got all kinds of out of whack.  As it turns out, I am due for my period the week of our wedding.  While it's not the end of the world, and I can certainly deal with it, is it okay to take the placebo pills a week early?  Or should I just suck it up?TIA

I don't know. Everyone's body is different. I have never had any luck trying to control my periods arrival by skipping the placebo pills. I would just check with your GYN. Give them a call and the nurse even may be able to tell you what to try. I don't think they will think badly of you for not wanting it on your wedding day so don't worry about that.

how was it out of whack?  I'm just curious because I've never skipped the placebo pills but I will if I have to!

I spotted for about 2 weeks and since it caught me totally off guard, I was miserable.  It didn't make skipping that week worth it at all.

I had the exact same reaction as you smange. It was totally not worth it. I felt like my hormones were off too... and all that stuff that goes along with your hormones being out of whack made me miserable.

I posted this on the October board too, and I got this response - I think it helps the most... If it means more to you to not have your period on your wedding than it does to have full pregnancy protection from the pill, go for it. However, you must use a backup method for the week you skip and the first 2 weeks of the new pack, like condoms, if you don't want to get pregnant.Alternately, you could skip the week of sugar pills, and take the next week of pills, then do a week off of them, to push your period back just one week. You will have full birth control protection then.Birth control pills work because they keep your estrogen/progesterone so high that you don't ovulate. you can always take more than 3 weeks of the pills at a time to keep those hormonal levels up, but never less than 3 weeks worth, or it looses it's full pregnancy preventing effect.

That last post sounds like it will work. Are you on a triphasic or monophasic pill? Its easier to skip a period or postpone with the monophasic pills since every week is the same amount of hormone. If you're on a triphasic (where the last week of pills is more hormone) if you take 1 extra week of pills, make sure its the ones with the most hormone. (if that made any sense!)I was supposed to have my pd on my HM week. So a few months before, I tried to skip a pd. Since my pill is triphasic, it really didn't work. Basically it just delayed my pd about a week - which actually turned out to be fine.GL!

I would stop taking the pill before, get your period and go back on, that way you aren't skipping.  If I mess up that is what I usually do, but I guess I have the pill SK is talking about.

Oh and I am not sure about the post on the other board my dr said I could use the regular 28 day pills and just keep on taking them so I could not have a period for 3 months, it worked out fine but I found I spotted if I even took the pill at night rather than in the morning, that is the only reason I stopped.  The dr says it takes your body some time to get used to, I didn't want to bother.  But every woman is different.

Thanks for the input.  I really just think I'm going to suck it up and have my period the week of.  It's not worth the headache.

I've been on monophasic pills and have been skipping the placebo pills for 5 years now. My doctor actually prescribes it for me so I don't have to wait the extra month for insurance to cover the next set of pills, too. The only side effect I experienced was spotting if I went longer than a few months, and my doctor said that every 3 months you should still stop the pill and let yourself have a period. It might be worth it to try!

I'm on monophasic and I'm skipping the sugar pills now. It's actually been better than normal, no spotting. I agree though, the triphasic could get more complicated. I'm going to end up skipping the sugar pills for two months to cover our wedding and honeymoon, and then go back to normal.

That's funny.  I had the same issue, but even worse!  My period kept hitting on my birthday, Valentine's Day and Independence Day, and I saw it was going to hit the wedding too.  It was getting ridiculous.  So I asked my OBGYN and she suggested I just stop my active pills a week early, let my period come early, and continue on like normal from there.  FI and I used condoms for a month as a back-up, but that was fine.

I was worried about the same thing, but for my sisters wedding. So my doctor put me on the nuva ring and I LOVE it! It says to keep the ring out for a week, but as long as you leave it out for 24-48 hours you may get some spotting for 2 days or so when you first start, but def not a full period. Now I just leave it out for a day, put a new one in and it makes me skip my period entirely.
