Wowza! Invites Already???

We went over to FILs house on Saturday, and saw that he had received a wedding invitation for a wedding scheduled the same day as ours! Sept 8th. Super early, right? I wasn't planning on sending ours out until June or so.

my FI is freaking out a bit, as we had no idea about this wedding (it's in Canada, a family friend, where FI and his family are originally from) and a lot of the same people who were invited to this wedding will be invited to ours. It's a super small town.  So now FI  and my FIL are freaking out, saying we need to send our invites out ASAP. I think we'll be fine, because I did send out save the dates.

but sending out an invite 4 months in advance? is it just me, or is this a little crazy?

Not crazy but yes, early :P
I plan on sending mine out by end of May just to avoid summer vacation issues with getting rsvps and to make sure all the out of town guests have time to book a room (there are lots of them).
I think in the case of the invite you received, it was smart because it's obviously a shock and people need time to plan if they are coming from far.

It may be earlier than the "norm" but some people are just eager beavers (get the Canadian joke there lol)

  • I think if you sent out Save The Dates, I would not send out invites that early.  I don't know why the other couple did... but, that is way to early.  6-8 weeks is standard.  10 weeks if you have a lot of out of town guests.

our wedding is Sept 8th also... and we are sending our invites out around July 15th with an August 17th RSVP.
  • lol, that is true. But I was definitely shocked, that's for sure! Especially since it was the first any of us had heard of this wedding.

I guess I need to get my tush in gear and get them sent out. At the very least, to the people in Canada so they can plan accordingly.

If you sent STDs to the people in Canada, I wouldn't worry about it.  We're sending ours early on purpose since we didn't send STDs and have a lot of OOT guests, so for the Sept. 1st wedding, we're aiming to send out invites by June 15th.
  • Maybe they heard about your wedding and wanted to make sure their invites went out first? I'll agree that it's way too early. I still think you should wait until June to send them out because 1, you sent STDs and 2, it really won't make a difference at this point since this other couple has obviously already sent theirs out.

  • I'm one of the crazy people that sent them out early! It's not for most people but it was necessary for us for many different reasons.
  • I haven't even ordered my invites yet :/

  • Yikes...I haven't even gotten the save the dates out! lol  Of course, I just started planning, though.  Anxious to get our venue booked so I can tell people the official date!  We are planning on Sept. 2!

  • I bet they got your Save the Date and are worried about getting their word out, too. Sorry you gotta deal with a friend's wedding the same day. I hope everyone comes to yours that you want there! :)

  • My Wedding is September 1st and I don't plan on sending them out until the middle of June...and I have labor day weekend to compete with :)  No worries you have plenty of time!
  • If you sent STDs I wouldn't worry about sending your invites any earlier, they already know that your wedding is the same day!
I am sending our invites out end of June/early July with an Aug 22nd RSVP as the resort wants numbers 3 weeks out, so that gives me 1 week to make calls.
  • I agree with PP that if you sent STD I wouldn't rush to get them out.  People are aware they are the same day and have to choose.  Those that really want to make it to yours will.  The whole point of STDs is for this reason....conflicting events!  As one person said their invite will have arrived first regardless of if you send them today or in June.  But, your STD was there first.  Our wedding is September 29.  Sending invites out July 30 with a September 1 RSVP.  We sent STD to people who have to get on a plane.  FI is trying to minimize his family who is coming that live 2 hours away who he isn't close with which is why everyone didn't get one.
  • I haven't ordered mine either. I was going to do that soon though, maybe in the next 2 weeks or so.

DreamCLG, where are you from? You mentioned Canada and it says you are in upstate NY, I was wondering if you are near me.

  • I am a sep 1 wedding and I mailed the invites this week. When you compete with a long weekend you have no choice. I only sent save the dates with Christmas cards to our Alberta family. I have asked for the reply for early June so that I can may send a second wave of invites depending on the declined cards received. I want to keep to 100 guest as close as possible. I have almost everything covered for the wedding so I think I will have more time to enjoy summer holidays!
  • cowgirl - i'm in buffalo :) How about you?
