Soooo....when my BM was in town visiting, she and her boyfriend got FI and I to try TJ wine for the first time. Ummm...I'm sorry, it's only $3-4 per bottle!?? Are you kidding me!?!?? They're actually pretty darn good too. FI and I have discovered that we both like the Charles Shaw red Zin, FI liked the TJ Merlot (I'm more of a Zin or Pinot Noir drinker), and we both know we like sweet Reislings, but we need another white wine to serve (suggestions?). That being said, what would you think if you went to a wedding that had TJ wines? I'm kind of at the point where I don't care. I mean, ideally, I would LOVE for us to serve local wines, but if we can pay 1/4-1/2 the price per bottle by getting wine from TJ, I have a hard time arguing with that.

TyGirl, we served them at my wedding, and everybody liked it, (judging by the many empty glasses scattered around!) We served the Charles Shaw red zin and the white Sauvignon Blanc. The Blanc is strong but has a sweetness that is appealing to most. We had a dessert buffet and app. buffet. I don't know how it would mix with a meat course. At $180 for 130 people for alcohol, I just couldn't say no to that price. The quality is really amazing for the price you pay. Not many turn their noses up at free booze! We had 2 kegs as well and most ended up drinking the Bud Light more so than our micro brew that was much more expensive. Go figure...

Not that I know of. We did go wine tasting on Friday which was a first for FI and I and we had a great time. We do drink a fair amount of wine, but all things considered, I mean, I know they're not going to be as good as a $40 bottle of Domain Drouhin Pinot Noir or Northstar Merlot, but shoot, they are pretty good. I was thinking it might be kind of fun to cover the bottles with customized labels and have people guess.

That and we can make it look like we're not so cheap.

Is the Sauvingon Blanc drier? Like where is it in comparison to a typical Chardonnay? I don't know why, but I don't want to serve Chardonnay mostly because that's what I typically see and I tend to dislike Chardonnays.

I like the TJ Chardonnay - It does not taste like a typical chardonnay to me... It reminds me more of a pinot grigio... You should just go buy some of the wines and have a tasting day!

We actually did just try the Australian Charles Shaw Chardonnay yesterday. It was pretty good, but I guess I wonder if I'm striking the right balance with wine selection?

Hmmm... I have not tried their zin and am bad at wine selection!! What about doing the zin and the merlot for red and a reisling and chardonnay for white? Too many different kinds?

No, that's what we're aiming for actually, but I guess I thought I should try to get a smooth red (what I tend to like) and one with more tannins (like what FI tends to like) for the red then a sweet white like a reisling and a drier white, but I don't know what else to get as the other white because neither FI or I like dry white wines.

I've considered it. The Budget Savvy Bride (weblog) used Charles Shaw at her wedding. She made special wine labels for the bottles. I know nothing about wine and nothing about beer. I'm clueless as to what to serve!

When I go buy wine I always get myself dry whites but I don't know if it is as popular or as easy to drink as your typical whites... I think that if you do not like the dry whites go with the ones that you do! I think that everyone will still find one that they like and enjoy themselves... I also love the idea of covering the labels with something personal! At my freinds wedding each label had a fact about the couple (ie their first date...)

Tygirl - for some reason when I saw your subject line, I was thing T=Ty and J=Jojo even though I KNOW TJs and call it that myself! :DFI and I rather like 3BuckChuck ourselves. FI prefers merlot and I prefer Cab, but he actually likes that Cab pretty well. My other cheapo wine that I like is Gato Negro from Chile that's about $5 a bottle or cheaper when on sale. Yes, the more expensive wines are definitely better on average, but I think at such a large occasion, most if not all people don't care.I love custom wine labels at celebrations, so definitely just do that!

I've seen lots of people use chuck, you can always put personalized labels on it and no one will know the difference.

omg, i'm here asking people in my office what tj wine is. we don't drink so when its closer to my time i need to ask for help. I'm making mental notes now. i think i'll definately be serving 3 buck chuck. for sure!

I say do it - it's a good solid wine that will save you a ton of money. For whites, I'd go with a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio over a chardonnay. SBs will be more crisp & fruity (usually citrusy), and PG will be a bit more clean tasting.

I like TJ wines. I really like their Proseccos which is sparkling dry wine (not as much the one in the blue bottle though). I don't think people will know they're from TJs -and I think most people tend to like them anyway. So totally buy from them if you like the wines. I'm planning on getting our Prosecco from them for the wedding. (My step mom is providing our other wine otherwise I might get more.)Another inexpensive place (but not $3/bottle) is World Market. I'm subscribed to their newsletters and they often have wine sales too for $8-10/bottle.

And you're a doll for finding those labels, merci beaucoup! Dawn - thanks for the tips on the Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. I never quite know what to get for a crisper/drier white wine because we just don't drink them.
