dresses with corset backs

Are you able to take a full/deep breath when your dress is laced up tightly?  I had my first fitting last night and couldn't take a deep breath because the corset was pulled so tight.  I could breathe fine, it was just really hot under the lights so that's when I noticed I couldn't take a deep breath.  The seamstress said that's normal and most girls wear their dress super tight for the ceremony, but loosen it a little for the reception.  Is this normal or crazy?

i honestly don't know.  the only thing i checked was that i could sit comfortably in the dress and i could.  never thought to check if i could take deep breaths.  i am guessing that i can though since i think i would have noticed. that was probably useless info regarding your question.

I had a corset and I had it tight at the bottom and a little more looser at the top. If it was too tight then all my flap about be coming out. It also gets a tad looser as the night goes on but I was very careful with how tight it was at top.

Oh and yes, I could breathe. Make sure you can breathe - especially in church.

good question delicate... mine is a corset back too. I'm thinking I'll try to lace it up pretty tight at the start (for pics, ceremony) - and I seem to remember the dress shop telling me that it usually gets looser on its own throughout the night. But if need be, i might loosen it a little before the reception so i can get my groove on ;-)

I could not breathe... but it did loosen up. :-)

It will loosen up as the night goes on. You want to make it tight but don't make it uncomfortable tight. Ditto Val - Make it looser at the "girls" and tighter in the waist to avoid the Back fat issue.

Ah I forgot to sit down at my fitting.  I guess being able to sit (and breathe?) is all controlled by how tight the corset is, so nothing to do with the seamstress. Thanks for the tip re: back fat!  lol.  If you went looser on top, did you have to use tape to keep the girls in or were they secure no matter what?

I didn't need tape at all. The top part was so stiff, it stood on its own.

The first 3 x's in the corset back should be loose...then from there you should really do them pretty tight to give you a great shape. In the end its all about how you tie in on the day of and you should do whatever you are comfortable in!

My dress also had a corset back.  The seamstress told me to make sure it is tied a bit looser at the top so you don't have any sagging at the arm pits.  I did make sure I was able to sit comfortably in it (which I was) and I had no problems breathing.   My seamstress also had me bring along my aunt, who was tying it, to one of the fittings so she could practice tying it correctly while the seamstress was there.  Not a bad idea to bring the person with you who will be tying the dress to make sure they know how to tie it the day of so it feels (and looks) good on you.
