Halloween Help

Ok, so before anybody asks: I'm not the biggest fan of Halloween. I never was, I know, there's something wrong with me. Anyway, the office I work at started doing a costume contest last year ... which I didn't participate in, because I'm just not into Halloween. I think part of this is because growing up my family didn't have a lot of money, and my mom's not as creative as she likes to credit herself for, but pretty much my "costumes" always consisted of wearing clothes I already owned (Like a "farmer", a "hippie", or a "baby"). And it was always dictated to me what I was going be, like say, one year if I felt like being a hippie, my mom would just be like "No, you can't do that this year" and not give me a reason. And rather than fight with her (A), its futile, and B), I hate fighting), I just gave in and gave up .. I pretty much stopped dressing up after middle school due to lack of caring. So I never really got to get excited about "being" something or having a totally kick @$$ costume or anything like that. Well, my "mommy issues" aren't the point. The point is, this year (Since not enough people participated last year, I guess), upper management has pretty much decreed that participation is "mandatory". So I have to actually come up with a costume this year. So since I actually have the freedom to do something I want (That's dress code appropriate), I wanted to actually give this a legit chance. I haven't dressed up since I was like 12, so I'm feeling a little "short bus" about the whole situation. I still fit into my senior prom dress, which is pink, poufy and covered in sparkly things, so I was thinking maybe if I changed at work (There's no way I can drive in this thing), I could get some accessories and be Glinda The Witch of The North (In honor of my recent excursion to see "Wicked"). ***CLIFFS NOTES: Must dress up for work this year, not used to getting dressed up, thinking about wearing my prom dress and being Glinda The Good Witch*** Does this sound like a good idea or completely lame? Also, if you think its lame, do you have any other suggestions? TIA!

Re: Halloween Help

 • Is there anything else you'd WANT to dress up as? Why not start off mandatory costume parties with a bang?I used my pink poufy dress and went as princess peach from super mario brothers. I didn't have poufy ball sleeves but people knew who I was anyway with the blonde wig and crown!

 • That sounds like a great idea. You just need a wand and a tiara, and you're done!
 • I think you're overthinking this. :)  I think Glinda is a wonderful idea, and it would be fun.  I think you'll get a lot of compliments! (Just don't forget a wand!)
 • Ginda would be great Well actually good witch but a great idea and not office wierd at all
 • Most of these things I found in our closet. I made my crown from rhinestones and poster board and then painted it yellow.I went to a craft store and found a huge button that looked like a diamond ring....just improvise!

 • Well, I want to do something fun and "different" as far as my office goes, and I work with a lot of older women, so I doubt anybody else is going to be hauling out their prom gowns for any reason any time soon. But also, since I never really had the chance to have a "big" or "original" costume, I wanted to try going "all out" for once. So yeah, just wanted to make sure this isn't the worst idea ever, lol.

 • I actually love that idea.  You'd need a tiara and wand, as someone else suggested, but that's just a quick trip to the local costume shop.  And I'd suggest that you get some sparkle make-up so you can put on sparkly blush and sparkly eye shadow.
 • Definitely not the worst! People that wear t shirts that they've written "this is my costume" is the lamest!

 • Stina-I actually COULD make this into a Princess Peach costume (Which FI would love, lol) ... I'm just not sure if anybody I work with, or that would be judging the costumes would get the reference. Sometimes, its sucks to be the only 20-something in the office, lol.

 • Hmm, better to go with what is relevant. You could totally make her wand yourself. If you have a broom handle or long pole, paint it silver or white and then get a sponge or something thick and easy to cut and make a star shape. Then paint that....then you should add some party streamers (the thin metallic ones) shooting out of the top! For more inspiration

 • Stina I'm totally in love with your Princess Peach. Mind if I copy? I have a pink bridesmaid dress in my closet screaming to be Princess Peach this year.

 • I think it's great! Princess peach or Glinda..either way!I love Halloween, and I'm a big fan of improvising with what you have or can get cheap at a resale shop.

 • You can totally steal. I don't OWN Princess Peach?! lol, I was only her because my husband wanted to be Bowser. He said that mario and luigi were both gay! lolI added the magenta ribbon too. His bowser shell is actually an ikea hamper that I paper mache'd and painted. I LOVE halloween!

 • Hmm, since it's really just a matter of accessories on either, I could always pick up stuff for both. That way I can be Glinda at work this year, and if an opportunity to flaunt my geekdom arises in the future, I can totally be Peach. I appreciate the suggestions!

 • Also, this will be a reason in general to USE my prom dress again. I absolutely loved this dress, but sadly, I only got to wear it once. ... So in a few years, expect me to be back w/ideas on how to re-use my wedding dress, lol.

 • haha, it's actually my husband that picks the costumes. I just execute them. Last year he said that he wanted to be C-3P0 hahaI hate buying costumes. What's the fun in that?! If I go out, there's a chance that someone else is wearing my costume! Plus, my mom always made all my siblings costumes....so we picked what we wanted to be 2 months in advance! Here's one of my faves!I'm a freakin' 10 year old bride!
