Box for wedding cards

Is it customary to put out a box (with a slit in the top) for people to drop off wedding cards at the wedding? If so, where could i buy one? Thanks!

It seems like I usually see something.  We had one, which we made using a recycled mailing box once we finally stumbled across something the right size, we covered it with some simple gift wrap and decorated it with scrapbook letters and stickers and cut a slit in the top for people to put the cards through.  You can also find card boxes at Michael's and other places.  We thought about just leaving out a basket but we wanted something that would be more secure just in case any of the staff at the venue were less than scrupulous!

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I've seen them at most weddings. We were lucky and our florist actually lent us one another bride had given her that matched our weddig colors.

Besides boxes things I like for this are painted bird cages (can probably find at a craft store) or an actual mail box.

  • Etsy.com is a great website for card boxes.  There are a lot of vendors on there that make them.
  • We're using a mailbox decorated with FI's last name/my future last name, that we plan to use at our new home. FI's sister used her Cricut machine to cut some vinyl designs, it looks adorable and we can't wait to use it at our reception and after!

The place we're renting our chair covers and sashes from also rent card boxes for a lot less than we can purchase one anywhere, you might try rental companies in your area.  One of the main reasons to get one that I've heard of is to minimize card theft.  Since the cards are more likely to contain cash/gift cards, they are susceptible to theft, and if not put in something, easy for someone to walk in and grab a few, as opposed to trying to get them out of an actual box/holder is more likely to draw attention.
  • We got our card box from my DH aunt for our wedding and she got us a very nice one from ayard sale.  I have seen them at Michaels and other craft stores, but I am sure you can find them online (amazon, ebay) for less then the stores.  You definitly should get one, and with a lock if possible.  If no lock, ask someone you can trust to keep an eye on it.

  • A lot of people do them but I think it's tacky.. like, this is where you should put the money you are giving me, thanks!!  Just my opinion.. At our wedding we are going to designate someone to keep a bag by their seat under the table to keep the cards in.  We will just give them to this person as we get them and they can be tucked away.  Probably FIs grandma because she is in a wheelchair (so she will be at her table most of the night) and I know she would love the responsibility lol (she loves to be in charge)

I don't think it's tacky, it's for security so someone doesn't STEAL the cards.  It happens all the time.  How are your guests going to know who to give the cards to?

<div>Wasn't it on the Etiquette Board within the past few days a posting about a guest handed someone a card because they thought that person was collecting them and the couple didn't receive it?  There was also a case when an aunt handed either the B or G a card, they remember getting it, but now it's lost.  Basically the E board from this past weekend is full of good reasons to get a card box.</div><div>
</div><div>I think you're involving too many people  You will need to walk over to grandma every time someone hands you or your FI a card, and while in theory this sounds easy, you're going to have a lot going on, and the more people you involve the harder it is to keep track of cards. Some people will just lay cards on the gift table, and if it isn't attached to a gift or in a designated spot, it's easier for them to get stolen or even lost in the general shuffle.  </div>

<div>Check out Home Goods. There are tons of pretty birdcages, boxes, and such that with about 5 minutes DIY (like, putting a ribbon on them or literally just cutting a card-sized hole in the top) would work as pretty card boxes.</div>

That is such a great idea! Love it!

We bought our card box for $9.99 at Christmas Tree Shoppe. It's painted blue and designed to look kind of like a lobster pot (appropriate because we're getting married on the beach). We thought it was really cute and it seems secure enough.

  • Really, there's no limit to your options here.

I got ours from Michael's, but I wish I had been more creative.  Some people use birdcages, make frame boxes, or use a large basket.  I also really like the idea of buying a plain mailbox, getting someone to paint your last name on it (married, of course), and then being able to use that for your home.  You can also use a pretty flower box or something like that which can coordinate with your wedding theme.  Also, many venues and florists either lend or rent card boxes.  Make it something that can be repurposed after your wedding (ours currently holds our cards from the wedding and shower, as well as the cake topper, toasting flutes, and unity candle until we get ourselves a house and a china cabinet to display them in...yeah, it's kinda a "wedding casket."  Whatever)

I would not designate someone to hold your cards for you, as someone else posted...they're guests, not employees!  Plus, having one central location makes it easier to keep the cards safe from theft or getting lost.

We got a birdcage from Save-on-crafts.com.

I have to assume anyone who thinks a card box is tacky hasn't actualy been to a wedding. The only wedding I've ever been to without one ended up with half the cards being stolen.

  • I found an old wine crate from the Bond winery in California.  It is a beautiful wooden box with the name "Bond" wood grained into all four sides.....incidentally, my new last name will be Bond!  It already has a slot in the top.  : )

  • I am not concerned about people stealing from me at my wedding!  My guests are close family and friends, and no one in my area gives cash.  You can't steal a check even if you attempt to.  Boxes for cards are just not something I see very often at weddings I attend and when we do see them, we side eye it.  To each their own!
