any venues in dc area that allow self catered events? I'm having a hard time finding one.

The Carnegie Institute of Science in DC allows you to bring in any vendor. Including a caterer. http://www.ciw.edu/

How big an event? There are venues that allow it, but it helps to narrow it down by size.
