Dress

Hi ladies!  I have an appointment tomorrow to try on some wedding dresses.  My question to you is how far in advance should I buy my dress?  I'm getting married in Sept. 2010.  I thought I had plenty of time, but everyone keeps telling me I have to get it soon because if it has to be ordered, it could take up to 6 months to come in!  Is that true?  I'm just stressing about the amount of time it will take to get here and how long it will take to get alterations done.  Any info on your experiences with your dress would be greatly appreciated!!

I think the amount of time it takes for the dress to come in depends on the manufacturer and sometimes on the salon you order from. I ordered a Saison Blanche dress from Bella Notte (if you have an appointment here, I'd seriously consider purchasing from any other store), was told it would take about three months but it took almost 6 months. They blamed it on the manufacturer but I found a girl on the Austin board who had ordered the exact same dress and hers took 4 months! More than anything, I would suggest trying on many different styles but also maybe not purchasing on the first day of shopping. Really think about what you tried on and what you really want for a little bit. I had regrets about my dress after I bought it (all ok now but after hundreds of dollars of alterations). I bought my dress a little less than a year before my wedding and in my case it worked out because the dress shop took so long to get my dress into the store and then the alterations took months (not typical) but buying too early means lots of time to second guess!

I've already got my dress and bought it early because I do love the dress and I won't be changing my mind about it. It took 6 months for mine due to the details on the dress. I think it'll be based on how intricate the design of your dress is for the time frame. Also you'll want to keep an open mind. I went in with one idea on a dress and came out with the opposite. I wouldn't decide the same day unless you're absolutely sure about the dress. My wedding isn't until July 2010 and I ordered my dress back in March and got it in August. Was it too early to get it? Perhaps but I love my dress so it doesn't matter. It's one less item to deal with and now I just need to get ready for the alternations part.

I bought my dress about a year out.  And I'm still just as happy with it.  However, I do recommend that after you purchase your dress you stop looking.  I didn't stop and kept second guessing my decision until my dress came in and I tried it on again.

Just wanted to 2nd PP with the advice to stop looking once you've purchased your dress! You fell in love with the dress that you bought for a reason & it's really hard sometimes to re-sell a dress that you changed your mind about. Happy shopping! Wedding dress shopping was by far my favorite part of all wedding planning.

Also wanted to add, I bought my dress about 8 months out from my January 2010 wedding.

I ordered my dress in October 2007 for my July 2008 wedding. They told me the dress would come in March, but it actually came in January even though I had to have extra length ordered. Start looking now and take a few months to decide what you like. My best advice is to take pictures of every dress you think you like. I can promise you that some of them will look VERY different at home! Seeing them from the camera will also help you to decide what styles look good on you. It helped me out a TON! Good luck and happy shopping!

I just got mine and my wedding is 6 months from now. I think most designers take 4 months.

Thank you everyone for your advice!!  I'm just going to try a few dresses on and start getting an idea of what I like and what looks good on my body type.  I'm taking my camera for sure!  I'm just going to try and have fun tomorrow!

I bought my dress way early because I knew it was the one and I wasnt going to be in SA for several months.  It still took months to come in plus alterations took a lot longer than I thought.  And all you want the dress to pick our your veils, shoes, jewelry, etc. so I think the earlier the better but definitely dont keep looking after you order it.
