Idea for Brides on a Budget...

We're getting soooo close to our wedding and we still had NO CLUE what to do about cakes...we're completely out of money, and I was thinking we were going to have to do without. *gasp* I've heard of doing a fake layer or two in a cake, just to add size, but I never thought of doing a whole fake cake... http://tinyurl.com/cakedummy What we are going to end up doing is this: We are going to order cake dummies from this place (I'm going to get about 5 tiers) and have my friend Samantha (who worked with a wedding coordinator and did all the cake decorating) cover it in fondant and decorate it how we want. When it comes time to cut the cake, you put a real piece of cake behind it, have some stratigically placed family members so none of the guests see that you aren't actually cutting into the cake, and then feed the real piece to each other. Then you take the cake to the kitchen to "cut it". In the kitchen you have sheet cakes ready to be cut and served. Soooo much money is being saved this way!!! And in the end, I'm getting a bigger, more beautiful cake than I would have if it were real.

It's really clever. My aunt actually did it for her wedding except she had 4 tiers the top three tiers were fake and they cut into that last one. and viola! I think that's what we're doing too.
