Engagement Session

Hi everyone, How many photos should I expect to receive for a 2 hr engagement session? My photographer says "typically 20 hand edited photos from 50-70 photos available" What was included in your engagement package?

We used a photographer who was just starting out that we found on Craigslist... so I know this might vary, but we got a 1 hour session and a CD of 60 edited images.

Some photogs take more than others, and may edit all of the images or just the best ones. Sometimes they take a bunch of photos but can keep thier prices low through limiting the # of images they give you and actually have to edit - so it varys from person to person. Our photog takes a lot of photos and edits all of them, but is not heavy on photoshop - he does basic color and simple corrections only...if your photog is heavy on the post-processing then it may make sense why there are so few shots from a 2 hour session.

wow - you got 640 pictures from an engagement session?  that's completely insane.  That's probably on the high side of average for a WEDDING, not a 2-hour engagement session.   That would be taking 16 pictures a minute for a solid 2 hours (meaning no posing changes, outfit changes, etc), which is outrageous.  good value for your money, i suppose, but how many wedding pictures are you going to have to go through?  somewhere around 3K?   we got about 700 from our wedding and even that was alot to sort through.  anyway, back to original post - 20 does seem slightly on the low side for a professional photog, but not unheard of.  and a 30% keeper rate (20 pics from ~60 taken), is pretty good.  I think we got around 50 original images, and 60 total images (different processing on a few of the same images) on a CD.  it also included a photo book (i think it was from mypublisher) that contained all the images.

I think 20 is *really* low. I'd say 75-125 is about average.

Yeah, we got about 250+ from about 2.5 hours. They color corrected all of them and buffed away a few flaws and gave us the cd for ALL of them. Our photographers always work together, though (there are 2 of them), so that might be why our number was that high.

My esession was included in the package I purchased.  I got a two hour shoot in 3.5 locations (the half is because we did inside and outside shots at one of them).  Downside is we had to order our own images.  We got a total of 160 to choose from, though I think that was high. my photog had just gotten a new lens and wanted to play with it haha

We wound up with about 80 images to choose from our engagement session. If we wanted anything edited we would have had to order prints (or edit them myself... but that option is not available to everyone). I'd say the available photos is on the low end... I'd feel better if it were more like 70-100. BUT, having 20 edited images included is pretty good... especially if they're all vastly different locations and poses. Do you really think you'll need more than 20 anyway? I personally think it's more about quality than quantity. I would ask your photographer why there wouldn't be more images to choose from... maybe his style lends itself to carefully composing the shots, and just taking 2 or 3 rather than keeping his finger on the trigger for the whole 2 hours.
