Readings - catholic ceremony

Just curious - for a catholic ceremony, must the readers be catholic?  I ask because I recently added a bridesmaid who I was originally going to have do a reading, and wanted to ask another friend to do the reading instead.  The one I have in mind is not catholic; if it's a big deal I was going to ask a cousin.

Your church may require it, although I don't think most do. You may want to double check though. One thing to consider - does this person believe what they will be reading? Not that they have to be Catholic, but they are proclaiming the word of God so he/she should be a Christian.

I just met with our priest and his answer was no, the readers absolutely do not have to be catholic.

At my wedding the readers don't have to be Catholic but the person reading the prayer of the faithful must be Catholic.  Also, the presenters of the gifts and the eucharistic ministers (if you're having communion).

Cool, thanks.  She is Christian, but just not catholic.  My prayer of the faithful reader is catholic (Mike’s niece).

Talk to your priest, it's up to him.
