Photography: Prints?

Is it me, or is it the norm that most photographers only offer digital files once the wedding is over? It certainly seems to be the case with all the photographers I'm interested in, while I'm really not nuts about the ones who offer prints as part of their packages. It doesn't bother me or my FI — we're more than happy to have our own prints made — but my mom seems to think that's the exception rather than the rule and that we should book someone who provides prints. This wouldn't bother me too much except that she's trying to talk us out of a photographer whose work we adore because he only offers digital files. Thoughts?

I don't think it is the norm, because I think most photographers still offer and promote packages that include prints.  I think more photographers are offering the digital files, because that is what people are requesting.  We got a package that gave us the digital files, and it only included a small amount of prints.  We decided to do the prints ourselves, because we couldn't justify spending so much for a photographer.I definitely think it is becoming more common for couples to do it themselves, and if you adore the photographer then I would go with them.

We went with just digital files!

I think just getting the digital files is the norm, plus maybe a small amount of prints or you can choose which prints you want...I would let your mom know that it's actually more cost-effective this way, because you can choose where you want to get the prints done. I always order prints online from shutterfly.com, they have great prices and deliver to your door!

Honestly, I found that the photographers that ONLY offered packages with prints generally tended to have lower quality work. Most of the better (and pricier) photographers I met offered digital only options (though most of them do offer prints as well). I suspect that the better photographers know that they can make money based on just the merit of the images they produce, while lower end photographers need to sell prints to make any significant profit. Just my theory though! Almost ALL photographers work with digital cameras anyway, and most don't have their own photo lab. So the only difference is that the photographer who offers prints brings them to a photo lab to have them done for you, while the other one doesn't bother with that step. You may as well get the prints done yourself.Anyway, we went digital only. The most important thing is that you love the photos.

Our photographer offered us a choice of prints/proofs or digital files. We went with the files because then we can do as we like with them and we're not stuck with getting one or two photos over and over.

I agree with Ring Pop.  We're going digital because I want the access to ALL my photos to print as many as I went when and where, which will save me money.  I am in love with my photog and am so happy he does digital.  In the end though, I say choose your photog because you love, love their work, not whether or not they do prints.
