NWR: Incredibly worried about my parents' dog...

Okay... so I thought you guys would be a supportive place to express this, since it seems pretty clear that there are a LARGE number of animal-lovers on the board.

Last night, my mother informed me that her 8 year old Yorkie, Baxter (who I love just as much as I would a human brother) was having some pretty intense stomach problems. Without going into the gory details, I'll just say it hasn't been pretty. He hasn't been able to keep food down for the past two days, and won't even touch his water.

This morning, it got even worse, so she called me in a panic at 5:30 am. My father and sister are out of state for a wedding, and I was the only person my mother could turn to. Taking care of two dogs (they also have an 12 year old schnauzer in perfect health) by oneself is complicated... but when one of those dogs is terribly ill... it's downright impossible.

So, I got out of bed, threw on some clothes, and drove 90 miles to help my mother. I was supposed to go to a friend's wedding today, but I couldn't just leave my mother alone and struggling.

We went to the vet, and the blood tests show it's a problem with his kidneys. We have no idea if it's the result of an ingested toxin, or something internal... which makes the prognosis a little difficult to determine. I am officially freaking out.

For now, I'm holed up in the office watching the healthy dog... because between the gated-off kitchen, which has turned into Baxter's sick room, and the wide open front door... there are few places she can safely hang out alone right now.

We're supposed to give him sub-cutaneous fluids and meds to stop the digestive issues... and hopefully he'll improve by Monday. If he doesn't they need to take him back in for further tests. I just pray it's not total kidney failure or cancer or anything.

Sorry to ramble... I just needed to get this off my chest. Positive thoughts and/or prayers (if you do that sort of thing...) would be greatly appreciated!

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about your dog! I have a yorkie myself and know how easy they are to fall in love with. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and your sweet little doggy.

    Best of luck!

Thank you all for the kind words, ladies!

He's still super lethargic, but apparently my mom and I rock at giving sub-cutaneous fluid injections (it's like an IV, minus the vein) because I think they're helping. My sister's good friend who is a rockstar veterinarian in Milwaukee has been giving my mom regular phone consultations, and she's optimistic that he'll recover. Here's to hoping!

Unfortunately, the sweet little dude didn't make it.

Whatever was attacking his kidneys and digestive system was apparently also hitting his circulatory system pretty bad... which caused issues for both his lungs and his brain. At about 9pm on Saturday night, we found him laying oddly in his bed and he was almost entirely unresponsive. We called the vet and rushed him in for emergency care. Apparently, he had suffered a stroke and then, while on the vet's table, had two seizures. It got to the point where he had about a 5% chance of survival, and an even smaller chance of avoiding serious brain damage... so we made the tough decision to have him euthanized. It sucked. It really, really sucked.

Awww, Maybe. I'm so sorry!  How old was he?  Did they ever figure out what happened? Was it something he ate?

    :(

So I am totally bawling reading this post- furbaby stories with sad endings :(. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family- I think losing a pet is just as bad as losing a human family member.

He was about two weeks shy of 8 years old... so this all came as a huge shock. We expected to have him around for at least five more years.

And, no... they didn't figure out what it was. The leading theory was that he ingested something toxic, but there was nothing obvious they could pinpoint. My parents are usually very careful with their dogs, and my mom is super OCD about keeping a clean house and about using non-toxic cleaning supplies... so it's hard to imagine he got anything inside the house. But, anyone with a dog knows how easily weird things in the yard can end up in their mouths... so you never know.

The vet did say that it could have been something that started systemically, but considering how rapidly it progressed, it's not quite as likely. The good thing is, it doesn't appear to be anything contagious, because my parents' 12 year old schnauzer seems to be in perfect health. She seems to be upset by the sudden lack of her favorite playmate, but hopefully that will fade in time.

So sad.  That's what I was kind of getting at... at least it's not contagious!  It sounds like the other dog is totally fine, too, right?

Who knows what he got into.  In the last 2 months we've had our puppy he's eating EVERYTHING.  He even ate the panel off of a tennis ball this weekend.  I'm super OCD lately about our plants though.

    Sorry again!
