NWR: Need ideas

There is a girl at school who is 17 and just lost her mother. She has 2 siblings she is now the sole provider for...one 15 and one 6 (!). Velocity(the dance company I'm on through school) gave her $100 out of our account to help her with whatever she may need but we are wanting to try and do something that lasts longer. I thought about giving her a casserole she could just put in the oven for dinner one night but I don't know any recipes that would work like that. Anyone have any ideas as to what else we could do for her?I know one member works at Old Navy and she was going to try and buy some clothes with her discount for them. I just can't imagine being 17 and having to deal with a 15 y/o AND raise a 6 y/o! And when she is in dance class, one could never tell all that she is going through. She seems to be a tough cookie and we all really want to help her but we are just at a loss so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!TIA!

There are lots of recipes like that! I made a huge chicken pot pie casserole the other night and DH is still raving about it! It's super simple, the ingredients are cheap, and it's perfect for the colder weather. I have the exact recipe at home, so if you're interested, I can email it to you tonight.

I don't know about freezing, but you can definitely prepare it and put it in the fridge for a a day or 2 before cooking. Or even cook it and just warm it up to eat it.. that's what we did for left-overs.Lasagna is definitely freezable.

I don't have much to help you out with, as far as cassarole type recepies, but I do want to wish you good luck and tell you that you are doing a very sweet thing.  I can't imagine what it must be like to be in charge of your two younger siblings.  When my parents informed me that I'd have custody of my brothers should something happen to them, my jaw dropped and I was well over the age of seventeen.  I can't imagine doing that now (I don't want to), let alone at such a young age.  That is a lot of responsibility for someone so young.  I'll keep you both in my thoughts.  If I can think of something to help, I'll be sure to let you know.

17??? I would think that the State of Texas would provide some sort of guidance for her. She is still a child. I am actually suprised that the state would allow her to have custody of the two other kids at such a young age. Social Security should kick in but still, that's just too much for a 17 year old to handle...especially if she is still in high school..... As far as answering your question, maybe offering to babysit some for the 6 year old or getting her a gas card (assuming she has a car)....

She's in college...not in high shool anymore. I'm not sure the legalities with her being 17. Gas card is a great idea! Thanks Lindsay! I can suggest babysitting to others but she lives pretty far from where I live plus I definitely don't have time right now. I can barely finish my current responsibilities heh.

I just heard about an organization called angelfoodminstries.com that provides food baskets for people in need.

I used to buy from Angel Food Ministries! It's a fabulous deal...Maybe we can order a box of food for her! If nothing else I can tell her about it. Thanks for the reminder!

Could the dance company do a fundraising event for her? A dance event or a car wash or bake sale or something?

I can bring up the idea. I do know someone else was hosting a fundraising even for her and we put up fliers for it. Thank you for that idea! :)
