Getting different dress than planned

I picked a Lazaro bridemaid dress, that I've been in love with since like July for my wedding dress. haha But it's looking out of our price range (I know, $300 is not much but hear me out). I had to go to emergency last week, and I find out my insurance doesnt cover emergency, so I have about 2k added to my debt from that nonsense, and I'm getting a tooth pulled next month that (yay for more crappy insurance) is going to cost $600 to pull and inplant.Sigh. So I've been looking at other options, I asked my bff about her seamstress for her wedding, and to build my dress from scratch would be over $400, however if I buy a satin dress she can just alter it for the price of netting and $10 an hour for her time.Reasonable, IMO. I just want a black dress covered in netting with a broch of some sort really, and the Lazaro was the only thing I found like that, hence my infatuation with it.SOOOOO, I just found this on ebay for $30! I really like the leaves, especially that it goes all the way around, but its not our wedding colors :/ Our colors are black and purple. Is there a way I can (by hand, even maticulously if necessary) paint the fuschia purple myself? I think the netting would still look good over it because it would be just a tiny flash of color, and will satiate DF's grandma who is totally against the black dress idea. "No, its not black grandma, it has purple too" But instead of the gathering at the empire waist, I would just do a velvet or satin tie...So, my question is, other than puff paint, what are my options for making this pink purple? What if I dyed the whole thing with RIT dye? Would that hurt the black at all?front:[IMG][/IMG]back:[IMG][/IMG]the Lazaro for ref:[IMG][/IMG]

  • Well, as long as you never plan on washing it, you can pretty much paint it with anything you want.  My vote, in that case, would be acrylic.  Keep in mind that the sheer black fabric over it will make whatever color is underneath look darker.  (I once had a prom dress like that- the base color was hot pink, but the black sheer made it look almost maroon.)  I can't speak for the RIT dye, but again, black sheer will make everything look darker, so even if the black picks up some of the purple, I imagine it will still appear black.
  • I work in HR, drakecanady and I come across situations like yours a lot. Do you have the $2k now? If that's what the place says you owe them, you can usually get away with giving them less if you can give it to them up front. I would start with 1K and go up from there. You would be SHOCKED at how little they'll take if you can do it right then and there and call it even.
  • Also, I realize that's not what you asked, but hey, saving money is saving money;-)
  • lol FMB!Nope, I sadly have to do payment plans on the both the 2k and the $600 so, that really puts a dent on what we're spending wedding wise every month :{A friend rec'mded that if I dry clean it first (since I have no clue if it has been cleaned or not) and then dont clean it before the wedding, I could probably get away with using a purple Sharpie!
  • Sorry, that sucks. FTR, I had to get dental work done sans insurance and it's the pits. Although... at least I can open my mouth wide enough to fit a grape in again. Yay for that! (I had my wisdom teeth removed)I'm no help with dresses, though I am going this afternoon to check a place out. Y'know, if you talk to the right people you might find a seamstress that would do it for super cheap under the table.
  • Well I've got a buddy majoring in theatre, I asked her to keep her ear to the ground for any costume people she knows that do contract work. We'll see how that goes. Luckily, I've got plenty of time to work with!
  • How far are you from Fullerton (Orange County)? I saw that your wedding is in Central CA, but I am not sure where you are...I am actually from Orange County, and my cousin still lives there. She is a fab seamstress (she is in my wedding and is making her bridesmaids dress) she does a lot of costumes for her local theater company. She works for Disney, and use to be in their costume department. It might be a hike for you, but I can see if she knows anyone in your area...its not much, but it might be a start. If you provide the fabric and the pattern, I am sure you can find a great costume seamstress in your area to make you the dress you desire on the cheap...

  • Punk, I'm in Stanislaus County, in Riverbank. Sadly, OC is at least a 6 hour drive. :{
  • I can tell you that I have painted on my clothing many, many times. I used to paint shirts with acrylic craft paints and sell them at music festivals. If you want to even dilute the paint just a litle bit with water you can so it will flow better. Use a small brush and paint slowly like a bride who wants a perfect dress! Even if you screw up it's a black dress anyway. Acrylic paints are permanent. I used the acrylic craft paints that I bought from Wal-mart. From there you can add anything you want. I prefer not working with RIT dye if I don't have to. I also used to make tie-dyed clothing and it is very messy and needs to be set with vinegar if using RIT. Definitely don't be afraid to get a bottle of black acrylic craft paint and test it on some material that you don't mind having paint on, because it won't come out. I hope this helps! :)
