Any tips for not going off the deep end while traveling?

We will be in New Orleans this Subday night through Wednesday morning. I don't want to completely blow what I've accomplished. As far as eating, I'm allowing myself one cheat meal. I can luckily get fresh fruits and veggies at the market, so that's part of my food plan. Any tips on keeping it healthy while out of town?

The knot is eating posts again! I can't see the OP argh!

Anyways, even though I dont know what you originally posted based on the subject of the post, I think I can figure it out. I always feel the pressure of how to eat right while traveling. Are there snacks you can bring with you like nuts or fruit? Things you don't have to prepare really or refrigerate but available for you to grab while you're on the go. While eating out I always try to stick with anything grilled like chicken or fish and a veggie side (typically steamed veggies or salad). If you go with a salad just beware of the dressing. Your best bet is to stick with oil and vinegar.

Do you use myfitnesspal or spark people to calorie count? The nice thing about either of those is they have a lot of chain restaurants menu items stored in them so you can easily figure out the calories and nutrition info. It's nice for traveling since you are probably more likely to stop at a chain place if you are on the go. Good luck!

  • TK is working against me! We are going to New Orleans sunday night through Wednesday morning. No fridge or microwave in the hotel. I can buy fresh fruit and veggies at the French market no problem, and am allowing myself one cheat meal. I plan to bring running shoes and pray that it's not too disgustingly hot...
  • I think you've got the right idea. Try to plan out your entire day so there's no "surprises". Make sure to have heatlhy snacks with you (granola bar or something) for the times where you're walking around and hungry so you don't get to the point where you're starving and then scarf down a bunch of unhealthy food.

    Goodluck!

  • I was just in the same position.  Had a week in London and was very worried about not having a big set back.   I also wanted to enjoy myself and have some of my favorite foods.   At restaurants I only ate half of what I was given with one exception but that meal was my one indulgence.

I went to the grocery store and bought some fruit and had that in the mornings for breakfast instead of the pastries provided at the conference.

I also got in workouts 4 of the 6 days I was there.  Sometimes it was only 20 minutes of cardio but it definitely helped.

  • Traveling is often a good opportunity to earn some extra exercise calories. Not sure what your plans are, but if you can gear them towards siteseeing, kayaking, swimming, dancing ect as opposed to activities basedon eating and drinking, that always helps.

I think just remembering your portion control an continuing to count your calories if you can...having snack for on the go helps alot too. That way you are not starving and temped to stop for fast food, ice cream, food carts, ect.

  • Thanks everyone. I got a great recommendation for a health food restaurant so that will likely be my breakfast spot. I plan to continue tracking calories and splurging just for my one planned cheat meal and some drinks here and there. I'll be walking around a ton so I'm sure that will be helpful, as well as bringing my weights and running shoes with me. H will be in class all day so I'll have plenty of time to get workouts in.
