carnival cruise question

we picked a set dining room time for our dinners... we were looking around online and saw that it shows ''my time'' as a dinner time. it says 'no reservations required but you may have a 20 minute' wait... does that mean even though we picked a set time we can actually go any time but may have to wait? or is that another dining time completely that you have to choose in the beginning?hope that makes sense. tia.

Re: carnival cruise question

  • I went a few years ago and if you were late or early you might have to wait but if you went at your time they sat you right away and at the same table each night. Dont know the specific rules though.
  • My guess is that it refers to what other lines call anytime dining.  Since you picked set time, like early or late seating, you are at the same table with the same people at the same time every day.  With anytime dining you show up at the dining room whenever you feel like eating during their hours.  You can choose to be seated at a table with others, or at a table with just the 2 of you.  When we were on our last cruise we didn't have to wait if we wanted to be seated with others, but if we wanted a table for 2 we did.We chose anytime dining because we didn't want to be tied to a specific time to eat every day and wanted more flexibility in our schedule.
  • it does take them some time to seat people sometimes. a lot of people show up at the same time-there might just be a wait to be seated.we always choose the late 830 seating because it fits so well in our schedule. late enough to do whatever we want during the day, have a short nap, have a shower and have a cocktail on the balcony before dinner.

  • "My time" dining is an option that you have to choose when you book the cruise.  It sounds like right now you are booked into one of set dining times, but it should not be a problem to switch to the 'my time'.  You should be able to switch now, but I know that you can switch when you get on the ship, just go see the maitre'd (sp?) at the dining room.  We sailed the Carnival Legend for our honeymoon in June and we had the late dining.  We were seated with another couple who were also on their honeymoon and we kept the same waiters every night.  With the 'my time' dining, you have a different wait staff each night and you don't have to have tablemates (but we loved our tablemates and wouldn't have had as much fun if we were by ourselves).  I wrote a (detailed) review with pictures on Cruisecritic dot com here:  http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1023218&highlight=     Hope that helps!
  • Carnival has 3 dining options: Early seating - I think this is 5:30 or so. Late seating - This one is 8:15 or something like that. My Time dining - you just show up at one of the dining rooms and it's treated like a restaurant.... first come, first served. You just wait until a table opens up. For early & late seating, you sit with the same people every night. It's nice because you kind of get to know them, but it can stink if you don't get along with them for whatever reason. You CAN ask to change tables but there's no guarantee they will. For early & late seating, you can either just walk to your table, or you can wait in line for a server to escort you. We always just walked to our table. My time dining means you will probably eat with different people every day. They are basically seating you at tables where the people who have assigned seating don't show up. So for the 5:30 seating, they will probably wait until 5:45 or so and if the people don't show up for dinner, they will seat you in their place. (Or at least this is how I understand it, since our Carnival cruise was before the any time dining.) You also have the option to hit the buffet, pizza place, sushi place, etc any time you want and you don't need to make reservations. If your ship has a supper club, you will need to make reservations for that. There is an extra charge pp ($35-ish) but it is SOOOOO worth it - the food was phenomenal and it was like 8 courses or something. A meal like that for 2 here in Chicago would have easily cost us $200.
