No Dance Floor...

I am in need of some advise. OKay, the reception is being held at my parents house in Michigan. The tent is going to be HUGE...40'x200'. My dad just had the whole driveway area where this will be at paved with concrete. My parents are paying for the wedding and my dad feels like that now that he paved the driveway area where the tent will be, we dont need to install a wood dance floor. He thinks we could just designate a space with tables around it, with the band by it, and call that the dance floor. With all that said, is that not good? I mean I really wanted the wooden floor installed because it would be easier to dance on...but I think my dad is going to win this one. What do you guys think about this? Thanks!Lindsey

Re: No Dance Floor...

  • Smooth concrete or rough Pavers Asphalt with black tar? I think it depends Why not have you and dad practice dancing on the driveway as soon as it is done and decide then how easy or hard it is to dance on. Personally I woudl expect it to hurt my knees
  • I believe its rough concrete...I dont live in Michigan and I havent seen it yet..but we will try it out when I go home in January. Thanks!

  • the place that i am renting is all carpet, we COULD set aside some tables and make a space but i think if there was a wooden dance floor guests would be more likely to dance. im going to rent a dance floor :)
  • so i would go for the dance floor :)
  • I think it would be fine to just dance on the concrete. And if it's new, there won't be grease stains or cracks, so it will look nice. If you wanted a little something extra to define the space, look for a gobo to shine your monogram or initials on the ground. If the space is defined by lights and tables, I think people will get it. I'm not sure if the wooden floor would be easier to dance on. I've never been on one, but I would worry about cracks and gaps or raised edges on the dance floor. You don't want grandma Mable breaking a hip at your wedding because she didn't see the raised edge of your floor! It's really between you and your dad. He probably thought he was doing something really great for you to get the driveway redone, and saving a little money in the process, and since he's paying for it, it's mostly his call, unless you come up w/the cash and get the dance floor yourself. And I'll bet if you get one of those gobos, people won't even notice the floor is cement.
  • Thanks for the advise! I think for sure I am going to do that, and leave it concrete. :)

  • I also suggest "practice" dancing on the driveway to see if it's smooth enough. If so, it will be fine. If not, you can rent portable dancefloors. They come in panels that lock together. Either wood or black and white checkerboard tiles.
  • Also, just in case people don't realize that area is the dance floor, have a few friends that you can ask beforehand to just start dancing. I bet people will just join in and not think anything of it.
