Poll: Jobs

Are you at the job that you want to keep for the rest of your life?  If not, what do you hope to be doing in 20 years?

Re: Poll: Jobs

I am interning at a company and working part-time at a retail joint.  So no, I would prefer not to work these jobs for the rest of my life.In 20 years, I really, really want to head-up a charity organization or at least do grant-writing independently.

Haha I've been thinking about this the entire morning. No! I'm not quiet sure but I want to be in a job where I help people but I'm not sure where exactly that would be just yet.  Is it too much to ask for respect and for people to listen and not act like I am invisible?  That would be a nice asset to a job.

IT is well-paying, but I don't want to be in it forever (and I'm not really in a full-time career yet, just internships)To be honest, I'd eventually like to stay home with kids and do photography somewhere down the road

I will be very sad if I am still in Finance in 20 years!  :( I would love to own a book store in the future, I hope that's what I am doing.

I doubt (or at least hope) that I will be doing the same job I am now 20 years from now.  I really hope that I'm at the same company, and doing something related to the job I am now, but just at an advanced level.  A team manager or more of a consulting job would be nice, rather than all the writing/designing/testing I'm doing now.

No. Ten years from now, I'd like to be an art director. Twenty years from now, I'm hoping for something more laid back and less stressful. Just not sure what that would be. I have to say, since I went back to Facilites Management (due to recession), it's pretty wonderful being able to go home while the sun is still out. If that's something you get to do, cherish it! I know that when I go back into gaming, I can kiss sunlight goodbye.

I love Human Resources but I want to be back on the staffing side. I hope to be a director with the company I am hopefully going to start working for in early November. I like that it's remote so I can work from home. If it were possible, I'd like to stay home with my kids and then when they go to school, run my own clothing and jewelry boutique.

I honestly don't know... I think that if I were doing what I'm doing now, I would be quite content.  However, I'm guessing we'll probably move and I will have to change.  Changing jobs scares me... I'm not adventurous in that respect, so I'd be pretty happy if I got to keep this job for a long while.

I like being a Commerical Underwriter so I do still see myself in the same field but at a higher level, maybe asset based lending or portfolio management.

I would be happy doing in mediation in 20 years. Every day is something different and I can do it any where, as opposed to practicing. However, I'd really like to have my own practice within 5-10 years. Although, I'm pretty sure this isn't going to happen since we will most likely not stay in TX...I'm not taking another BAR exam....EVER.EVER.EVER.

Well, while I really like Vanderbilt and would love it if they gave me a long-term permanent job, I definitely don't want to be working part-time still in 20 years! But I do want to still be in music librarianship, for sure. I'm still not sure if I want to go into management, but that's where the money is, and eventually that's the only way to move up career-wise. I do want to be involved in library instruction, and I also would love to be teaching graduate music research classes or even some music history/musicology classes. I would love to get a PhD at some point, but I might not be ready for another 20 years or so. I love that I have a choice of doing a PhD in either library science or musicology. Or both! I also want to be highly involved in the Music Library Association, writing articles, giving presentations, etc. Whew! Looks like I've got a lot to do, I'd better get on that!

I hope to be out of the customer service call center in 2 years, much less 20! I would really love to go back to school, get my masters, and become a Musem Curator

I could easily do this for the rest of my life.  I love what I teach and I love my kids.  Admin is a different story entirely and I know that, if I ever leave education, it will be for that reason alone.  If I was going to do something else, I'd try to get a job as an underwriter with my mom's insurance company.  They have people in art history who go around, valuing works of out and making security suggestions, etc.  I'd also love to do the personal insurance for big wigs.  The movie "Proof of Life" was based off one of their cases.  She's heard that they issued policies on Tommy Lee Jones before too.

windrilene - I think it would be awesome to work at a museum, I actually applied for a job at a musical instrument museum. I think UT is supposed to have a good program for that. I took a class this summer with the curator of the Rare Book Room at UNT, Jennifer Sheehan, and she was one of the nicest people, I'm sure she'd be willing to talk to you if you had any questions about that area. Jennifer.Sheehan@unt.eduIf you contact her, tell her Anna Perkins sent you her way.

I want to coach gymnastics forever!  I always thought that I wanted to own my own gym.  But I am starting to think otherwise.  My bosses don't get paychecks.  They get their bills paid and thats it.  We have been open for 3 years, and we are a darn good gym.  Other than the 2 gyms in the area that produce olympians we are one of the best.  So I think that being a team coach on salary might (at least for a while) be the smarter thing.

Bananna, THANKS! I'll take a look at their programs- to be honest, its something I put on the back burner when the economy slumped, but the more annoyed I get with my current job the more I think about it.
