Holiday Parties

What do your workplaces do for holiday parties? I'm in a major, MAJOR rut trying to plan ours. Very small town, we've done it all, twice.

Re: Holiday Parties

  • To my knowledge, nothing. There is only me and one other person in my office though so any party would be kind of lame. They might do a company wide party but ive never heard of it.
  • Maybe it is time for drunken Christmas karaoke.

  • My company moved into our current building two years ago, so we had the Holiday Party in the new building out of obligation. This year we are going to a local Country Club. I also just found out we are dressing up for Halloween. I am going to be Pam from The Office. Not sure if that counts for one of the holiday parties, but I am all for keeping work-related things within work hours so this fits.

  • They cut out the big corporate party years ago.  We do a holiday potluck in our department (~30 people) over a lunch hour.  Some of us who socialize outside work do happy hour together.

  • We go to an upscale place and get really boozy on the club's dime and eat a tons of heavy hos d'oeuvres. Oh, and there is absolutely a DJ and a raffle of a million awesome things like flatscreens and nice wine and ipods. At least that is the company party I am planning this year ;)
  • You have to plan it? I think that might be fun. I don't work but our Student Dietitian's Association has a party every year. Everyone brings a dish and people get assigned certain things to bring like plates, forks, drinks. I wish we could have alcohol but that would be a nono! We also play dirty santa.

  • You know there is such a thing as too many holiday parties? I never knew that until I worked here. We have a holiday party for all of our commercial properties. I actually had to skip a couple last year because I was holiday partied out and didn't want to drink anymore. Once December gets here, I'll be going to like 2 or 3 a week.

  • The year before I got here, the entire office went to a drag queen show out in Chicago. Ha, I guess it was awesome! Last year we just went to a dinner theater show. It was really nice.

  • i love planning our companies parties.last year we had a 2 day thing.. where we had an open house at the office and then went to a lounge and had it "vip'd" off with open bar etc.. then the next night we booked off a restaurant in town and had about 50 people.. open bar.. yadda yadda. It was nice!this year i'm getting quotes for the Observatory on Grouse Mountain.. you take the gondola up, it's fine dining etc. :) i LOVE Christmas!
  • We do something different every year. Mardi Gras, Mystery Dinner (my fave), 70's themed, Country bumpkin themed, Deal or no deal...

  • Oh we have toy drives too. Those always go over well.

  • We had a holiday ball at an upscale hotel.  Heavy apps, free booze, dancing, lots of opportunities to commit CLMs (career limiting moves).  They'd always have some stuff going on--you could get your picture made with your date old school prom style, get your picture superimposed on a celebs body, goofy stuff like that.
  • It's definitely fun planning it, once I decide on location, etc. I love planning a menu, games, etc. We usually wine and dine our staff, so no one brings anything, no potluck, etc. We used to do a chinese auction, but our staff has grown so much in the last 2 years that the last time we did it it took over an hour and people were bored with it.

  • Oh yes, along with charity, SDA puts together food baskets for the poor and sugar free candy for the diabetic children.

  • We have a giant party at a conference center in the city.  There's food, drinking, dancing, socializing and hotel discounts at local hotels.

  • Wow.  Hotel discounts at local hotels. Redundant much?

  • Lanner, that sounds amazing! Unfortunately, our resources are pretty slim. Last year we went curling, which was fun, and had dinner catered.

  • generic dinner-dance type thing... its pretty decent though because usually 100+ people actually show up.

  • Our last holiday party was at Dave and Busters... it would have been super lame if it wasn't for the alcohol.

  • Depending on the economy, we either have a party in the office or at a local bar. There'a always dinner and drinks. We have about 150 ppl at my company, and the best part of the christmas party is the raffle. The office manager gets our vendors to donate stuff--since we do a lot of travel the travel agency usually donates a grand prize of 2 free plane tix anywhere in the US.  All of the senior staff donates something, too. I put together a basket of stuff from my friend's eco-friendly store and give it away. It's really fun to get random gifts from staff plus have the chance to win something big, but I think it only works well b/c of the culture of my company.
  • We don't do anything.  We did have a sort of impromptu potluck a few years back, though.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Last year we had dinner/cocktail party on a small cruise ship and cruised around the harbor for a few hours. People do weddings on these ships too. It was nice. But some people, despite being warned, were late and missed the boat. Literally. This year we're apparently doing it on a Saturday rather than Friday (thanks for killing my weekend - I wanted my own party that night) and it's rock-and-bowl at Jillians. Which really seems to be a step down. Or three. We didn't have a summer picnic this year. Last year we went to a Dodger's game for our summer company picnic. They always complain that it's expensive, but we get so much Oriental Trading Company shiit on random holidays, and made-up theme days like "wear a football jersey" day.
