Frame Guestbook Setup?

In place of a formal guestbook, FI and I are thinking of having our guests sign a matte board for a frame.  But I'm not exactly sure how this is supposed to be set up at the reception.  Do you leave the matte board out with a pen next to it?  Or do you leave the matte board in the frame?TIA!!

My friend did this, and she had the whole frame put together, except for the glass, so everyone could see the picture. No one got created and wrote on the picture. It came out really nicely. They put it on a table near the entrance/exit. Same table as the card box and the favors.

My friend put the picture and matte board in the frame and then put it on an easel set up in the reception.  Then people could sign it and it was really neat.

We had a wedding poster made by someone on etsy and then had someone frame it, with a mat, without the glass. It'll be flat on a table as folks arrive at our wedding ceremony. My younger cousin (she's 14) will greet guests and ask them to sign the mat. During our ceremony, it will be taken into our reception and put on a tabletop easel for everyone to see the poster and the signatures. I think it's important to keep the mat in the frame so that you're certain the signatures will be visible...if you take it out of the frame, guests might sign up to the edge and then they'll be covered when it's framed.
