Wedding Cake... A Year later

Hi Knotties, Our first year anniversary just rolled around this past weekend and we attempted the tradition of eating our cake topper. There is no way to sugar coat this but it was awful! I wanted to give you ladies a heads up to make sure whomever is packaging up your cake removes any flowers from the cake topper. Our florist decorated our cake with a few fresh flowers per our request but I guess the genius in the banquets division of the hotel didn't think to take them off prior to wrapping up the cake. Well, cake in a box wrapped heavily in suran wrap with decomposing flowers in the freezer doesn't smell too good when you unveil it after a year. We were so disappointed. We tried to salvage the cake by cutting off the top layer and eating a bite of the rest but the smell made us want to hurl so we threw it all away. We had taken the cake with us to a restaurant where we were having dinner and the waitress was nice enough to bring us a cake knife and server when she knew we were celebrating our anniversary. oh well.... we tried! Thankfully we have fond memories of our delicious cake from our wedding day ! Hopefully many of you will have better luck with your cakes!

Aw...that sucks! Now I am wondering if the flowers were taken off mine, I think they were!  I'm planning on breaking tradition and eating my topper in a few weeks when I have my family over to watch our video, then buy a new one for our anni.

We ate our cake on our 1st anniv. and it was...okay. I had wrapped it really well and it wasn't freezer burnt. But it was a bit soggy. We ate one piece each and I left the rest in a cake dome while we were on vacation. When we came home, the raspberry filling had leaked out so I threw the rest away. It was nice to do that little tradition, but it would have tasted better if we had eaten it earlier.

Our baker provides a fresh new top layer for our one year anniversary free of charge, so we don't have to freeze the top layer.

I'm sorry that happened to you. We are having gum paste flowers on our cake so I'm hoping it will be alright.
