wedding planner??

Just wondering how many people actually hire wedding planners... or if there is a less expensive alternative?I spoke with a planner who is going to do some uplighting, provide the linens, 'upgrade' my centerpieces (that I think are fine the way they are), do the bouquets, decorate the head table, and be there for the rehearsal and day of the wedding. She quoted me $3,000. This is probably CHEAP- but we are REALLY working within a budget. The only thing I can NOT do is uplighting, so I am wondering if I should just do without the uplighting and do the rest of the decorating myself? The venue is a very square room with HIGH CEILINGS.  I also don't know how easy it is to coordinate everything for wedding WITHOUT the planner. What is everybody else doing??  I am very creative but worry that I'll 'bite off more then I can chew.'Thanks in advance =)

I personally have never understood the point of a wedding planner (unless of course you are planning a wedding and only have a couple of weeks to do so).  As far as your uplighting goes, if you go to projectwedding.com and do a search for uplighting, there are some really good articles of how to DIY.  I'm actually going to order the lights myself and do my own uplighting.  (The lights are only $12.00 online)  When are you getting married?  If it's after me, I could tell you how it works and whatnot.  That just seems to be a high price to me, but again, we want to plan everything ourselves.

Thanks for that website!!!  :)  I will check it out and see what its like.  Our date is May 22nd!!  If you can remember to let me know how they work, that'd be GREAT!!!  ` I guess my main concern is organizing the actually WEDDING- our Church doesn't have anybody who will stand behind the scenes with us the day of and guide us when its time to walk, etc.  Is THAT NECCESSARY or is that kind of self - explanatory or something simple somebody in the bridal party can pay attention to? Thanks again!

We got married this past May 22nd--it was a gorgeous day!  We didn't use one because I loved wedding planning.  We did DIY several things.  You have plenty of time and if you wanted to, you could do it all.  If you want a DOC (day of coordinator), then that could be a good option and more cost effective.Lisa Beth

Are you having a rehearsal the day before?  Usually churches will set up a rehearsal so everyone knows where to go and what to do during the ceremony.  That's usually a huge help.  You could also solicit the help from a family member if you want.  Pick someone that has been to a lot of weddings and kind of knows how things are run and ask them for help.  A day of coordinator is also helpful, I'm sure.  It's my understanding that DOC's aren't as "involved" in the planning as much as they are helping with the small details the day of.  I'm sure you'll be fine planning your own wedding.  Brides do it all the time (just look at this board and check out the May 2010 board...lots of help there as well).  I personally could not have done a lot of this without The Knot.

We didn't hire one, but after-the-the-fact I wish I had!! Well, actually I would have hired just a DOC that would have taken the stress off of me. While I am in the process of becoming a DOC myself, being the MOB AND trying to coordinate stuff was TOO much!! We had a friend of my daughter step in to act as DOC...she did the best she could, but there were SO many little details that she was totally oblivious to! It would have been nice to just relax and enjoy the day without worrying if x,y, and z were getting done. $3000 seems high, but I'm thinking about what we paid for flowers, the labor to create them, plus all the labor it took for us to do centerpieces, head table and other decor....I think I'd pay that.

Hiring a wedding planner was the best wedding decision I have made so far...My wedding planner is amazing! She has helped me with everything (finding venders, making center pieces, chair covers, she even made my flower girl dress!) She is even going with my Fiance and I this weekend to the finger lakes to purchase wines for the rehersal dinner!!  I hired her for decorating and tear down and for the rehersal dinner/ day of as well.I wasnt really into hiring one at first, but it has made everything so less stressful! I know I would be pannicking right now without her!! I did my research and found a women with really great prices and reviews...here is her info if your interested: Lori Dorman  570-850-0963She lives in Sunbury Pa and she is a freakin saint!!! :) I hope this helps!!!!
