Reception Venue - Hotels

Anyone have any suggestions as to nice, but affordably priced, reception venues at hotels in the Northern VA area?  We are looking for a place with a nice ballroom (something that doesn't look too much like a business meeting room) with a place for a cocktail reception that isn't in the middle of the hotel's lobby.  Thanks in advance!!

It might be higher than other NoVA hotels you might find, but try the Key Bridege Marriott.  There is a ball room on the top floor with a space for the cocktail hour also with views.

I'm not sure what you consider affordable but I looked at the Key Bridge and the top floor was way out of my price range (with a food/bev min of $28k!).  Try looking at the Alexandria Hilton (its right at the King Street Metro).  It's a great location and the wedding coordinator was really nice.  www.alexandriahilton.com good luck!

The Mark Center Hilton off of Seminary Rd. They have an outdoor courtyard they use for ceremonies and possibly for the cocktail hour.

Try these: Waterford (Springfield or Fair Lakes) Grand Atrium (Tyson's Corner) These are not in hotels, as they are specifically event venues and very close to hotels. Good luck!

Springfield Hilton.  The prices were much lower than the Alexandria hotels.

Thanks ladies!!  I'll have to check out all those suggestions!  I tried the Springfield Hilton but the lady I dealt with was so unprofessional and rude over the phone.  They are much more reasonably priced than other Hiltons, but after that I didn't even want to bother inquiring further.

I haven't looked at the prices specifically, but the hotels in Crystal City tend to be cheaper on weekends since they are primarily business hotels, and the majority of their occupation is during the week. The same goes for hotels in Tyson's Corner - although Crystal City would be far more enjoyable for guests since they wouldn't need a car and could easily get around for sightseeing.

The Washington Marriott in DC is fairly reasonable, compared to other DC hotels. And they have the ballroom/cocktail hour on its own floor, which I like, and the ballroom is beautiful! Good luck!

I can agree with BellaMcCarthy - that's where my wedding reception is!  If you would like contact information/details - let me know.

Also, don't forget that everything is up for negotiation and all packages can be customized to fit your budget to a reasonable point. For instance, you can take out a display stand during cocktail hour, or reduce the number of hor d'oeurves, take out table wine service, etc. If you're not looking for much hassle and haggle, I definitely recommend the Waterford - there is one in Fair Oaks and another in Springfield. Those are straight up reception venues that are not attached to hotels. However, if you're looking for a hotel with some ambiance, I would recommend the Renaissance M Street (a Marriott hotel); their "base" wedding package is about $90 a person. It doesn't include a whole lot, but it's a good price point to start negotiations. Also, the Marriott in Tysons Corner just came out with a $39 per person wedding package - again, totally bare bones in terms of food, but still include linens, set up, etc. They also have a $78 per person package which includes a cocktail hour too.Even some "higher end" hotels can be negotiated and packaged down. I am currently sitting at a proposal of about $125 or $130 pp from the JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue (their base originally started at $156 per head) and just got a revised rate of $112 per person from the Westin Alexandria with a few extras I wasn't even expecting. I am taking a break from site visits and vendor selections right now to focus on our home buying process, but hope to get back into "fun" stuff again soon!Good luck!! :)
