Brides Against Breast Cancer

I am planning on donating my gown after my wedding. Can any of you tell me how quickly you received your receipt after sending your gown? And, for tax purposes, how is the worth of the gown usually calculated? I am just about as good at doing taxes as any random drive-thru McDonald's worker.

I'm your gal! I coordinate the Denver show. You get your tax reciept same day if you donate at a show, if you mail it in, it can tak a couple of weeks, it just depends on whats going on at the warehouse. We're heading into a bit of a slower season (Oct is our busiest) so it shouldn't take too long. For tax purposes, you name your own value. Usually the full price paid for the gown. Under 5k, the reciept is enough, over 5k, there is additional information needed. let them know and they will send that. They will accept donations of dresses, slips, shoes, veils, jewelry... pretty much anything bridal. THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION!! Make sure you keep us on your tickler, we'll be back in Denver next fall, we always need volunteers!

Hey! Kari is right for the most part...you don't necessarily get to choose the amount; you can deduct your basis (so what you paid for the gown). I'm a CPA, so I promise it's reliable!BTW, this is a great cause that I had never heard about before, so thank you for bringing it up on the board!

thanks for the clarification. i thought the fact you can't lie was implied. BABC does not name the amount, the donor does.

This is random, but I would love to volunteer for this event next year. How does one go about signing up? Thanks!

We don't have a date set yet, but once we do, I will post it here. I had a lot of knotties help this year so I'll be back. You can always check www.makingmemories.org click the tour calendar. once we're locked in, we'll post there. Then there will be a link to sign up to volunteer. Most of the details get worked out in the final two weeks anyway.

I wouldn't mind volunteering at an event, either. It would be very memorable and fun. Its going to be hard to part with my dress immediately after the wedding, but I just see no reason to keep it. I won't be able to sell it after the wedding, either, because of the extensive alterations. No one could buy it but someone who is exactly my size and height, which would be hard to find.

Any word on the Denver show?  I have a gown I'm interested in donating.

What are the rules for cleaning the gown prior to donation?  I seem to recall that having it properly cleaned can be quite expensive (hundreds of dollars).
