My name-change experience

I changed my name yesterday.  I intended to take my maiden name as my middle name.Social Security in Portsmouth did it with no questions asked, but warned me that DMV wouldn't do it.  Apparently, there's a statute in NH that makes it so you aren't allowed to change anything beyond your last name in the event of marriage, divorce or adoption.  To change your middle name in NH - even if it's your own(more identifying) maiden name, you must petition your county's Probate Court - with a $90 filing charge! So, according to the DMV, I still have my original middle name.  STUPID.  I'll petition the court if/when it becomes an issue, and only when it becomes an issue.

I'm surprised the SS office in Portsmouth did it.  They told me I had to go to probate court to change my middle name.

DMV told me they had no record of middle names just middle initials.  I wasn't able to change the initial, but later had no problems at the SS office or with my passport.Perhaps it's time to write our congressmen to make this a law???

the inconsistency is ridiculous!I think I was more nervous about changing my name(s) yesterday than I was about anything on my wedding day!  I just didn't know what to expect.DMV made me keep my given middle initial, and told me that SS shouldn't have changed it for me.  The helpful woman at SS told me to wait 24-hours to go to DMV, but I was going to drive right past it on my way back to work, so I stopped in anyway.  The federal system at SS can't possibly be linked the DMV records anyway.  I'm glad I didn't listen, because the middle initial thing was the only hiccup.I went in the afternoon, and the whole thing took me 30 minutes total - it took longer to drive to the two offices from work than waiting and getting it done.  (I also printed out the forms and had them filled out before I went)

that's what they told me too chayer-- in Nashua so it is all over the state.  the DMV just wont do it without the change in probate court and to be honest I dont want to spend the money right now nor do I have the time so I just left it.  I think my dad was disappointed but it's just SO dumb and not a big deal right now.  nh is so stupid sometimes but hey congrats to you Mrs. F!
