Would this look goofy?

Good morning everyone :)Would it look funny if our ushers wore just khaki pants and a dress shirt and tie instead of a tux like everyone else? FMIL seems to think they HAVE to wear a tux, I disagree, and FI doesn't really care. Just wondering what you all think!

It's formal, but I'm not asking that everyone dress to the nines. I was thinking the full tux would look silly, too.

That would be fine. Or if it pleases your FI more, you could ask the ushers to wear whatever suit they already own, so they would be in slightly more formal attire without going to full-blown tuxes.

I would find the khaki pants to be awfully casual compared to a tux. Could you at least do black pants? I don't think they have to be in tuxes either, but maybe a middle ground.

If they are wearing khakis, dress shirts, and ties they could potentially be less dressed up than your guests. I would ask them to wear a suit.

Suits would be better, but dress pants and a dress shirt and tie are fine, too. Just don't make ushers buy something they don't already have just to seat people for 10 minutes before your wedding.

The only thing that may be goofy about this is that the default guest attire for weddings in my circles is dark suits, so it may be odd if the ushers are dressed more casually than the rest of the guests. Now if your wedding is casual and many of your guests won't be wearing suits, I think khakis and a dress shirt would be fine.

I'm not going to ask them to go out and buy anything that they don't have. That's partly why I suggested they do khakis (which you're all right-to casual). I know for sure that one of our ushers has suits galore and wouldn't have a problem with it.

btw I asked my brother & sister's husband to help seat people so that DH's groomsmen could focus on supporting him, and so that there were some folks from my side of the family there to greet old family friends, etc. They didn't dress specially for the occasion, and it worked out fine (you can give them a bouttineire (sp?) or something if you want).

We didn't really have a bridal party (only BM and MOH), but four of H's friends were ushers and they wore whatever they wanted. I got them all matching bouts, though.

i had my ushers in tuxes and i am so glad that i did. i realize now that they would of looked out place otherwise. but, if they won't look out of place than let them wear a dress shirt

Our ushers wore tuxes, the same as groomsmen. We treated them the same as all members of the wedding party. They were in the program, introduced at reception, in all the WP photos. They were just as important as the rest of the WP, and are just as good of friends. I think to have them wear something different would imply otherwise.

All of my ushers are wearing black pants and long sleeve white dress shirts and my mom is making them all matching ties. I didn't want them to have to buy anything, I was going to go with suits, but one usher doesn't own one, so we went with the black pants/white shirts!

I would say black suits - that way, a decent one will cost about as much as a tux rental (at least in my area...) and they could use it again later.Maybe black pants... If it's formal, and the same color dress shirts, that way it's also clear who the ushers are. For my folks, khakis would blend in with a lot of the guests.Just a few ideas, and it might be a good compromise between what you and your FMIL both think would work best.

I am doing the same thing with my ushers actually. Their parents cant afford it and frankly i dont want to have to afford it. So a simple pair of slacks and shirt/tie that match is fine for us!

Because FI and groomsmen are wearing black suits. the ushers will be wearing black slacks, shirt and ties. due to the economy and the fact that they are my son's best friends, teenagers, with the expense of purchasing high school rings and prom right around the corner that will work for me.

if the groomsmen are wearing tuxes then i think it would look disjointed for the ushers to be in khakis. i don't think they need to be in tuxes, but i would suggest suits, or even just black pants and a dress shirt/tie.

The last few casual weddings ive gone to ,they have all been wearing khakis and shirts. Just make sure all their shirts match cause if they dont I think it would look kind of stupid. Not my favorite idea but if it works for you type of wedding

I had my ushers wear black dress pants, a white dress shirt, and I purchased matching ties for them to wear. The tie also served as their Thank You gift for participating in our wedding!

I really don't think it would look goofy. You can really do anything you want. As long as the guys match, or have a boutonniere, or stand out in some way (so that guests know they're ushers) then I think you'll be fine. And if you're not going for the formal wedding look, then there's nothing wrong with letting your ushers go casual. Have fun!

I think if the BP is in formal wear - the ushers can go one step down and wear suits. Khaki is a little too informal next to the tuxes. In my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your opinions/advice. We've decided to have them wear a dark suit. Because of the economy, we don't want them to go out of their way to purchase or rent something. They already own suits, so this works perfectly. We aren't implying that they mean less to us than other members of the wedding party, and they already know that. Because they already own suits, they won't have to pay even to rent a tux.
