stupid question about name changing...

so i think i will bite the bullet and change my name.  so i know i have to go to the social security office.  my question is: do i have to go to the social security office in the city/county i got married in, or can i go to any office?  hey, i told you my question would be stupid.  thanks ladies!

Re: stupid question about name changing...

  • I think it can be any social security office.
  • Any SS office is fine.  This is one of the things you can't do online - must be in person.  Bring your original Marriage Certificate and they will give you a letter with your new name.  The new card will follow in the mail shortly.

  • I don't know if rules are different by state, but I went to the SS office in the city we moved to after the wedding. Same state, different city. Just had to have the wedding documents and my birth certificate maybe? Not sure. I think if you called the SS office nearest you they could let you know what you need. :)
  • I dont understand why you would wait over a year to do it.
  • you don't need to understand why i waited over a year to do it.  thanks you, ladies for your helpful answers.
  • yow. You can't do this by mail. Has to be done in person, and you need your drivers' license and the original marriage certificate or a certified copy of it. It needs to be done I believe, where you reside. http://www.sss.gov will give you more information about what you need and where you can go and the addresses of offices near you.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Go to the nearest office to you...My town doesn't have one so I had to drive about 20 mins.  It wasn't a big deal...
  • It doesn't matter where. My mama went to the ss office on the other side of the country with no issues. I went to the one 5 hours away with no issues. Do you mean your marriage certificate?

  • You can go to any SS office to request a card in your new name. I live in one county and work in another and went to the one closest to my work because it was more convenient - no problem. You might encounter some problems changing your name since it's been so long since your wedding. You need to change your name with the original document (in this case, your marriage certificate) within a "reasonable time period" of the document's issuing date. More than a year after the wedding might not qualify as a "reasonable time" anymore. If that's the case, you'd have to file a request for legal name change with your county probate court before you could change your name on your SS card, driver's license, etc. It takes a little longer, and you'd have to pay filing fees (here I think it's like $80).
  • Social Security is a federal office, so you can go to any location.

  • thanks.  i tried to look it up on my computer at work, but it blocks out some parts of the website.  i think it's up to 2 years before i have to worry about anything extra like costs or extra paper work.  i'll have to offically look up everything at home.  the advice has been great.  thanks!
