Name change - How long is the process?

How long does it take to process all the paperwork for changing your name? FMIL called me last night, FI's grandmother is officially taking the entire family on a Mediterranean cruise in July (second honeymoon!!!!) and they're booking it today, so she wanted to know what my name would be on my passport. Which means the day we come back from our honeymoon, I need to get on the name changing wagon. The only thing I'm really worried about is my passport. I can't remember how long it takes to get a new one issued. Any advice?

You can have it rushed for a fee, but I beleive the normal tunr around is like 4-6 weeks.

I am a month out from my wedding and still havent gotten it all done yet. But I think you could technically do it all pretty quickly. You have to wait until you get your marriage certificate back, which really depends on the town or city that issues it. Then you have to go to Social Security and the RMV, and then I think you have enough documentation to get a passport? Also, if its an emergency, and you are really really polite, the Boston passport office can do same-day service for a fee. DH had that done once. I think you will be OK if you are intentional about getting it all done as quickly as possible. :-) PS---entire family on a mediterranean cruise? are you kidding? jealousssssss

Ok, great! I'm just going to have to be on top of all the paperwork. Seriously, spucc. She is very generous. This is a once in a lifetime trip, we're all kind of mind-boggled!

I would be all boggled, too, but that is so awesome. Talk about memories for a lifetime. Grandma's got the right idea. :-)

It took me a solid 3 months to get everything switched over.  I still accidently introduce myself with my maiden name.

I had my name changed on everything in about a month. Have not updated passport yet though. Social Security office takes 24 hours to get information updated in the system, so you cannot go the RMV for 24 hours after that. It's stupid. If you already have a passport, you can try to do some research to figure out what exactly you need just to change your name. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Once you get the ball rolling, it doesn't take very long.  Once I had my new SS card (the receipt isn't good enough for everyone), I was able to change my name at work and on my bank accounts.  I still need to change my license and passport.  You should have plenty of time before July to get everything changed over.  All you really need is your passport, since that's the only ID anyone will ask for.  Your tickets must match your passport.

I did it in 2 days. Go to social security first and they'll give you a reciept then go to the RMV. If you go to the RMV in the same day you need the social security reciept other wise wait 24 hrs and go to the RMV fill out the form and they'll make the change. They'll ask if you want to change your picture and your signature or just your signature...I of course chose to keep my old pic. Those are the 2 major things you need to do. Other than that it's up to you how long it takes to change your name at the bank and credit cards etc.
