I have looked at every dish pattern available. All of them. FI is REALLY picky about what he's ok with, and so far this one seems to fit for both of us. Thoughts? Opinions?[url]http://tinyurl.com/yj2upjo[/url]

They're pretty nice and will go with practically any color scheme. I prefer square plates though.

They are pretty but NMS (I prefer patterns that aren't so geometric). What are you two looking for in a pattern?What about her Pebble Point pattern?

I would LOVE square. I want modern/contemporary. FI wants plain. Black, if possible. I'm ok with black, but I mostly want something that isn't just flat/plain.

Have you considered a classic all-white or ivory set? That's what I chose, and they go with anything, obviously

I wanted maximum versatility for setting the table - red at Christmas, pastels at Easter, etc. This way I can choose different chargers, placemats, napkins...

About square, I like them too. But I'm afraid they might be trendy, and I'd hate for my "good set" to be dated in 10 years. Round can't possibly go out of style

If you really like square, I'd recommend it for your everyday dining set instead.

Expat, definitely not ivory. Plain white would be ok if I was getting something else with color right then, but I honestly think I'd get bored with just white. That said, do you have a particular set with a variety of round/square that is in white that I could look at? I haven't found that.

So far, for what we want/need BBB has everything. We went to Macy's today, and they had zilch in the store. About 10 different sets, and they all looked like my grandmother's china, rather than something I'd have. I love C&B too, though.

No, I got my set from a department store in Mexico. I registered for all the highly breakable stuff here, so nothing would be damaged in the move. But I think Williams Sonoma has an all-white set... Crate and Barrell probably does too, but I'm not sure about the quality. I'll look and post what I find. About being bored, you can dress up the plates with napkins, chargers, placemats, napkin rings, etc. I'll be back with what I find...

Both are very nice. My set looks like the first, except without the halo effect - there's no indentation on the plates at all - and the coffee cup is cylindrical.

I REALLY wish we had a C&B locally here so that I could see the stuff in person. Might have to wait until Thanksgiving, when we go to visit his family. They have a huge one a couple miles from his parents house.

Mikasa makes a couple of sets that are antique white with simple designs. Italian Countryside and French Countryside. They carry it at Macy's.I currently have Mikasa dinnerware that is about 20 years old (it is used as everyday ware and was my grandma's) and still going strong. There are a few chips here and there, but everything has held up pretty nice with the amount of use it has gotten.

If you're going with a more casual dinner wear then I'd go with something more like this: [url]http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&sku=109183[/url]DH and I wanted a more formal China setting and I'm not a huge fan of the pattern on the 1st one. The big thing about some of the Kate Spade stuff to me is that it may look dated in a few years.

I agree with Banana--a lot of the Kate Spade stuff will look dated in ten years. Since you want modern, I'd go with something either white or with very clean lines and minimal color. That way, it will look sleek but won't look dated too quickly. I think square plates are fine for every day, but those also are trendy.

My latest thought is a white set for more formal, and a separate set with color for more casual. My problem is I LOVE to cook and entertain, but I've always done it on either the cheap dishes I bought in college, or the handmedowns I've been given since. Now that I'm actually looking, there are too many choices. Gah!
