Florida Honeymoon?

Anyone have any ideas for a Florida honeymoon besides The Keys? We want somewhere romantic, preferably Gulf side and with a variety of things to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Florida Honeymoon?

  • We like the Ft Myers Beach area.  The Best Western is central and all rooms have balconies.  Ask for one on a higher floor to get the best sunsets.  From this base, you can go to Naples or Sanibel.  Try the Mucky Duck for a romantic sunset dinner.
  • Sarasota is beautiful!  And the Ringling Museum is fantastic.

Or go to St. Petersburg or Tampa, stay near the water.  Visit the Dali Museum, the Chihuly Museum, eat a lot of grouper and gulf shrimp, go kayaking.
  • Don Cesar at St. Pete Beach, FL.

If you don't mind the Atlantic side, Amelia Island Plantation, FL is beautiful.

My H and I went to Key West for our honeymoon.  We stayed at Southernmost on the Beach.  It is located about 1 block away from the Southernmost Point bouy marker and is on the quiet end of Duvall Street (the main street in Key West where a lot of restaurants and bars are located).

The hotel was perfect...we would go back in a heartbeat.  Key West was great for what we wanted.  We wanted a vacation where we could decide day to day if we wanted to do something fun and adventurous or just be lazy and lay by the pool.  In the evenings we walked Duvall Street and did a lot of people watching (definitely entertaining).  We also did a few cruises with Fury...we went on the sunset commotion on the ocean and a dolphin/snorkel tour.

I highly suggest Key West...my H and I can't wait to go back...it is such a different way of life down there...everything definitely moves slower and you just feel so relaxed and stress free.  But if you do go to Key West, I highly suggest renting a moped, unless you absolutely love to walk, because there is very little parking so a rental car would not be the best idea.

  • Siesta Key is beautiful! i also suggest Clearwater or St. Pete beach. If you have any questions let me know since I live here.

  • FI and I went St. Pete Beach/Clearwater area a couple of years ago - it was fantastic, I'd recommend it.  I also went to Panama City Beach for 6-7 years in a row for spring break, but I like St. Pete better because it's not as crowded and I'd consider it more romantic.

I live in Florida, and if I was going to do a honeymoon here it would be Siesta Key.  It has beautiful white powder sand, and plenty of things to do.  The Sarasota and Tampa Museums are nearby too.

  • Sanibel, hands down. That's what I would do, anyway. :)

I grew up spending my summers on Fort Myers Beach and as I got older I realized what gems Sanibel and Captiva are. Bowmans Beach on Sanibel was just rated the most secluded beach in the U.S. and it's gorgeous. If you want some nightlife, just head over to FMB and you'll find some fun beach bars.

Renting bikes from Billy's on Sanibel has always been a fun thing to do during the day; just riding around the island and stopping at shops, restaurants.

Agree with ski2play, the Mucky Duck on Captiva is awesome for a romantic sunset before dinner.

2012 will be the first year I won't make it down to that area (saving for the wedding!) and I'm so bummed!
  • Sanibel definitely, its so amazing, its relaxing and romantic and just all around drop dead gorgeous!

  • Thank you all for the great advice! I will be looking into all of these places!! Thanks for all of your help!
  • For those who have been to Sanibel Island or other nice FL honeymoons, where did you stay? Did you get a rental car or just walk/bike everywhere?
  • I usually stay at my aunt and uncle's house on FMB who live there... but I've also stayed at Pink Shell on FMB and rented condos on Sanibel/Captiva. I'd check out VRBO.com if you want to go the condo route. I can't really comment on actual hotels on the island.

Even with my relatives living there and having a car, we always rent our own car when we visit. It's easier because you don't have to stay in one area. You could probably bike everywhere if you stay just on Sanibel, though. I just never have.
  • I agree with all of the Sanibel comments- Sanibel and Captiva islands are beautiful! Also, the Mucky Duck is a great place to eat on the water! I've never stayed on the islands, but I know there are some really cute cottage-y places to stay. I think everything is kind of pricey over there though.

Also, I hear the beaches in the panhandle are really nice, but I've never been.

If you're not completely stuck on the west coast, I highly suggest St. Augustine. I think it's one of the coolest and most beautiful places in FL (also one of the oldest in the US). There's a ton to do there and a lot of great B&Bs. Anastasia State Park, just out of St. Augustine, has a beautiful beach. I also hear Amelia Island is really nice, I believe it's at the most northeast point of FL.
