Are Intro Posts Done Here?

I have mostly posted in NEY and Offbeat Weddings, though I have lurked a bit on other boards.  Not sure if intro posts are done here, or if you just jump into the fray.

I am recently engaged to my SO of about 4 years.  I have a fabulous, funny, moody, smart daughter who turned 8 this year.  She just might be more excited about the the engagement than either FI or I am... might be, but not quite.  At the moment I am working part time and still searching for more fulfilling work.  When I can get hours, it keeps me offline until the evening, so I am always late to the party on here.  I'm an avid reader (started a book club with some friends a few months ago: B!tches, Books, and Booze.)

There is definitely more I could tell, but not sure how much you want to know right now.  If you wish, interrogate me...

  • Thanks Anysunrise, back at ya!

Dot, we have no pets.  FI and I are both allergic to cats and he is not much of a dog person.  I do get to visit a wonderful cat who adores me at my sister's house.  Her name is Hrududu and she is trouble; we're kindred spirits!

  • We have a date and a venue set where we will hold both the ceremony and the reception.  Otherwise, we just have a lot of ideas we are floating around.

We know we want to skip some of the traditional elements like bridal party toasts, bouquet toss, garter toss.  FI and I have a lot of friends who are DJs and play music we would want like 80's, Disco, French House, and so on for the reception.  There has been discussion of a chocolate fondue fountain in lieu of cake.  Oh, and in homage to our love of astronomy and the series Cosmos, some of our ceremony music will be from Vangelis.  FI might be molding records into flowers for our centerpieces as well, sort of like THIS.

<div>I would cry inside if I came to a wedding reception and there was a chocolate fountain instead of cake.  Cake is delicious.  Chocolate fountains are a breeding ground for various communal bacterium thanks to gross people.</div>

Be careful with molding records. I ended up with a massive migraine from the fumes or whatever. And I was working in a well ventilated area.

  • Gyah!  anna, I never thought about that and now I don't think I can forget it... EVAR.

avsfan, FI would do it at work, where there are myriad of fumes to contend with the records.

We'll see, like I said these are all early ideas to make our wedding fun, personal to us, and cost effective.  What we end up doing may be very different.

It's definitely a neat idea. I just made bowls and I love them (not using them for the wedding though, I changed my mind). I just thought I'd warn you just incase you didn't know about it.

  • A+ on the book club. I want to start one but I don't know enough people IRL.

I agree with anna about the cake thing. Chocolate fountains, while dekicious, are too sketchy. Also, I foresee many a child putting their entire hands in it and getting covered in chocolate.

I'm glad your daughter is so excited. I'm going to a wedding this weekend where the bride's daughter (16 or so) took a really long time to accept the fact that her mom was getting married again.
  • My daughter will be the only kid at the wedding and she will be 10 by then, so probably no hands in the fountain.  However, the idea is starting to sour on me a little after thinking about the possible spread of germs in general.  We'll see.

Seshat, I don't know your situation well, but we only started with about 7 people that expressed interest in our book club.  Only 4 showed at our first meeting, but then more people wanted to join after hearing about it.  We meet again tomorrow.  If a local one doesn't work out.  Try this: read Turn of Mind and chat about it with me here!  ;)

That book is phenomenal, but wasn't the one our group chose to discuss.
