XP: Get the most out of your wedding dress!

I just wanted to do a quick PSA for all of you brides to be!

I know that this isn't for everyone, and that a lot of you are "against" trashing the dress for whatever reason, but I figured that if my experience could sway some of you on the fence, it's worth it!

Your wedding dress does NOT need to be a one-wear gown. Get the most out of it! Let's be honest, how likely is it that your daughter (if you even have one) will want to wear your dress when she gets married? One of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is finding THE dress.

What are you REALLY going to do with your dress when the wedding is over? It'll likely go in a box and never be seen again. So let's get the most of it.

Here's what I did:

Got married:

Trashed it:

Cleaned it and wore it to our AHR:

And then got the "bling" taken off the sash, and had it shortened to a party dress that I can wear for anniversaries/whenever:

And I did all of this for around $1,200, including alterations, the cleaning cost, and second alterations... which is less than some girls spend on the dress before alterations. I will continue to get use out of it too, it's a hot little number now!

Re: XP: Get the most out of your wedding dress!

  • I've thought about doing something like this as well.

    Anniversary
  • I do like this idea, yes, and have considered it.

But... cutting my wedding dress is something I just can't do right now. :-)
  • I did the same.  Except I got married in it, then trashed it (except it got dirtier at the wedding than my TTD, so it wasn't remotely trashed at all), cleaned it and sold it.

I don't have any plans for a trash the dress, but shotening my dress is probably not an option. It's a giant poofy ballgown that tons of bling :)

My Aunt shortened her dress too and now wears it out on their anniversary dinners!
I might do this eventually after the wedding. Although it might have to be some time!

<div>Ditto. It got more dirty at our AHR with the nasty floors than laying on lava rocks, in the sand, and in the ocean water in Hawaii.</div>
  • My dress probably wouldn't look that great shortened (but who knows)? However, I plan to have photos taken in it more than once. Though as a wedding photographer myself, photos are obviously very important. We'll be doing a day after session, and I have a few different locations I'd like to do bridal portraits in but don't want to chance getting the dress dirty so I'll do them after. I also plan to do a TTD in Mexico. :)
  • Is yours a Dere Kiang? Mine looks like that but the skirt comes off and it becomes a shorter dress...

I'm going to get mine dyed blue to match a necklace my FBIL bought me for Christmas to wear to a friend's wedding in September.

Faux pas or not, the dress will be blue come September and ready for party number 2!

Your dress shortened really cute on you!

And even if you do shorten your dress, you can still save the fabric in case you want it to make a ring bearer pillow, christening gown, or other family heirloom.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

It's Alfred Angelo style 2034. I love the idea of dying it!<div>

    <div>Thanks :)</div><div>
</div><div>And So true! I had the train taken off before our destination wedding anyway so I have the fabric from that AND from having the bottom chopped off. I also had the sash cut and sewn in by the corset back, so I have the extra pieces from that too to turn into a hair ribbon or something.</div>
  • I LOVE the idea of shortening the dress to wear on anniversaries!  I'm too emotionally attached to my dress (yes, I'm one of THOSE people) that I could never sell it and have wondered what to do with it after the wedding instead of letting it just sit in a closet.  Mine is a mermaid gown, and although it's a bit formal with all the beading, I think it would be perfect with a dark shawl and shoes.  :)  Thanks for the idea!
