Photographer Pricing

I'm new to wedding planning, and I am starting to research photographers.  I'm trying to get an idea on average cost for a quality photograher.  Any insight?

Re: Photographer Pricing

I would say the average price for a reputable GOOD photographer in Atlanta is ~$2200.

I found the average to be ~2500 which I think is crazy! Student and new photographers who charge less can be found on Craigslist. We're using a family friend photographer who gave us an unbeatable rate.

For Atlanta, the average starting point is $2000. However, expect to find rates anywhere between 2000 and 8000 for a professional photographer in the Atlanta area.

If you need any help or have any photography questions, feel free to send me a PM.

    ciao.

The average is $2200 - $2500?!  Not the four we looked at before deciding on ours.

We booked our photographer (from South Carolina,) and we paid $800 (included her travel and hotel expenses.)  We got photography starting three hours before our wedding until we left at 10:15 p.m. that night.  She did some slight photoshopping and retouch work for us, and then sent us a disc with the copyrights signed over to us in the end.

@Hydro: $2k is the average starting point in the Atlanta metro area for a legally registered, insured, full time Professional Photographer.

Now if you are interested in hiring a hobbyist photographer, new photographer, student photographer or part time photographer (has a full time job elsewhere)... then sure, you can find lower rates. These types of photographers typically offer lower rates because they are not working as a legally registered business, not paying taxes to the government and not insured.

Yes you can find good photographers in this price range and sometimes can make out really well, but its still a gamble, and I do not mean the images themselves. With a real PRO you are paying for assurance. Assurance that they have experience, and not the picture taking type, but the "oh crap, that just happened, this is how im gonna make it work" in split second type. Amateurs do not have this yet, this is why they are still amateurs. Also, you are paying for the fact that a real PRO has insurance. This is not just to protect them, this protects you as well.

I ask you, does your photographer have insurance that covers damage they might cause to the wedding facility or another vendors property? If not, you will get stuck with the bill. A PRO will have Liability Insurance that will cover this. What happens if your photographer has a technology breakdown and loses ALL of your wedding photos? If they have Indemnification Insurance it will cover the cost of recreating your wedding day to retake the photographs. If they don't you will likely sue them and still not have any pictures.

This is not a post about putting down the low cost photographers. If that is all your budget allows, then by all means go for it. There are some great ones out there, just be thorough in your research. The purpose of this post is just to inform you of the things you are gambling with when you go with an amateur so that you know what the risks are.

Sorry I rambled so much, did not mean to thread hiJack :)

You should check out Capture The Image.  They are running a special for sign-up by the end of October that includes 5 hours of photo, video and a 3 hour photobooth for close to $2,000.
