Name Change Process

This may be a silly question, but I live in MA and I'm getting married in Providence in a few weeks. How do I go about changing my name? Is it something done on a state level, and if so, which state do I change it in?

Even though you're getting married in RI, you'll do everything in MA (DMV, etc.).

The first place you need to change your name is with Social Security Office. Once you have that, then you tackle the DMV in MA to change your license, registration, etc. From there you work on the bank, credit cards, etc etc.
The only way RI factors into this for you is that your marriage license will be from RI. I recommend getting at least 2 original copies, then making your own photocopies. Social Security needs an original and you'll want to keep an original in a filing cabinet. For everyone else usually a copy will do.
