How to choose a DJ?

Ok, planning a wedding from three states away is starting to become a little stressful. :) I have my venue and photographer booked, and am in talks with a caterer and cake bakery. All good there. Now I am starting on the DJ. I have no idea what a good price for a DJ is, and I just got off the phone with the first one I contacted. He wasn't quite helpful. All he said was that he is the most expensive DJ around (because apparently he's the best?) and he does not negotiate on prices (when I asked about my wedding being on a Friday). He gave me a rough estimate of $1300 for providing music/equipment for my outdoor ceremony and a 4 hour reception. Is this a reasonable price? He did say that he has associate DJ's he can have contact me who will do it for less, but then he warned me about being careful who I hire. What? I would hope that if they are his associate DJ's he could vouch for their quality and professionalism. I am just feeling a little lost and overwhelmed here. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Heather

That seems high to me.  I'd highly recommend All the Right Grooves (a board favorite and commonly referred to as ATRG) -- they charge $650 for 4 hours.  They also have their schedule posted on their website so you can check your date.  Not sure where you're located -- they're out of Charlotte but will travel.  I'd also check out the NC Bride Bio (just google) and check out DJ references from other NC brides.

Thanks for the recommendation. The wedding is in Asheville. I don't know how much is usually charged for travel cost, but I would assume that it would end up being about even with hiring an Asheville area dj on the high end of the price range. But maybe not. I'll definitely look into them! Thanks!

I check All The Right Grooves' website, and they actually list a price for Asheville weddings, plus they say right on the website that they give special deal for Friday weddings! Yay! I sent them an email right away. Thanks again!

I hope you can get ATRGs - always check BBB for any issues that may arise.  ATRG is a board favorite . . . good luck!

I highly recommend ATRG! $1300 is not a reasonable price for a DJ, so definitely do not use the guy you talked to today!

I also highly recommend All the Right Grooves.  I am from NJ but got married on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  I came on this board and took all the girls' advice and booked All the Right Grooves.  Jill traveled 6 hours to get to my wedding and the price was very reasonable in my opinion.  She was SO AMAZING!!!!!  I'm so glad that I came on this board and they sent me in the right direction!  Thanks girls :)

kick...kick...tantrum.....i wish ATRG was available my day!!! i am having just as much trouble trying to find a DJ in the Wilmington area!!!!

if ATRG isn't available, try Joe Bunn DJs. They're in Raleigh but would probably travel, esp to Wilmington. Many girls on here have used them and we're using Ken Holmes (one of their DJs) for our May wedding. Very professional and personable - we're paying $850 for a reception in Durham.
