Nuvaring Q...I know its been asked before...

Ok so I went to the lady dr today and she gave me a Nuvaring.  I'm waiting till marriage...but I'm wondering will he feel it?  Does your FI/DH feel it?  Seems like it would be in the way...I can see this getting TMI really fast.  Hit me with it.  Let's go.

Re: Nuvaring Q...I know its been asked before...

  • Sometimes. But he said it isn't annoying, it's just there. Although sometimes it rubs me the wrong way, so I just take it out during and then put it right back in afterwards.

  • DH could feel it sometimes and sometimes it would be a little uncomfortable. I ended up just taking it out whenever we'd have the sex. Probably not advisable, but... Oh, and good luck with the ring. I just went off it and switched to Seasonique.
  • There is no problem at all with taking it out during. Just make sure it goes back in right afterwards-don't fall asleep right away and forget to put it back in.

  • I've never had one, so everything I'm about to share is second-hand information: First, this is probably a much better question for your doctor. But, second, I know with Mirena, there is a plastic string attached (so that it can be taken back out) that is much better off trimmed. If it's not, there's a chance he can feel it. I really have no idea about Nuvaring though, so again, I would ask your doctor how that works.
  • Well I asked her, and she said "some do, some don't... ask your friends who have used it."  Well, I only have 2 friends on it...and one said he feels it, and one doesn't have the sex....so here I am.
  • I think it all depends on sizing issues...the size of him and you. Also, it kinda moves around in there, so it can get out of position and him hit it one time and not another.

  • Sometimes. Or not. Sometimes it comes out during sex, which is funny. You can take it out, but only for up to three hours at a time, so just don't forget to put it back.

  • It also depends where your ring is inside you at that particular time. Sometimes it ends up in a place that makes it more uncomfortable during the sex than normal.
  • Ok so I'm useless, but I'm loving that it's "the sex."
  • I asked him and he said he didn't notice it with his peen, only with his finger.

  • hehehe.  its what my friends and i refer to it as.  for some reason it makes it a little easier and funnier to talk about.
  • I've never tried the Nuva-Ring, but I've been on the pill for almost 7 years and like it.  Personally, I wouldn't want to mess with sticking something up there, possible discomfort, etc. but that's just me.  Good luck with whatever you decide!
  • Yeah I was on the pill for a looooong time (since I was 13), but the level of hormones wasn't helping my migraines.  I came off them completely.  But with the wedding approaching, I need to be on something.  So the dr said that the low dose of Nuva (plus it not being a pill) would probably keep the migraines at bay.  So here's hoping the ring works!
  • Why did you choose the ring of all options?  Im being nosy but it is just about the last BC option I would pick.
  • Well...the pill dosage is too high and with it being a pill- it makes my migraines worse- so no pill.I'm too overweight for the patch.  I'm losing, but she said I was still about 15-20 pounds from the patch. She said the Ring was my best option.  I don't want shots (ew needles!), and she said an IUD wasn't ideal for me.So no pills, shots, patch...ring it is!  Are there options I didn't consider?
  • Sex & Romance on the nest has an alarmist post about it"I ALMOST DIED FROM IT"yeah, overreact much?
  • No problems at all with Nuvaring, except that I would forget to put it back in at the beginning of each cycle. I have problems with all hormonal bc, but I had the least amount with the ring.
  • What sucrets said.
  • I haven't had any serious problems with the ring, but I have noticed that I have a few more mood swings. Its been happening for awhile and I don't think it's the ring in particular, I just think my body is trying to tell me to get off BC.

  • I love the Ring. I have never had any comfort issues with it and neither has DH. You can take it out for up to three hours at a time if it does bother you during sex. I remember to take it out and put in a new one every month with reminders on gcal. Unfortunately, I have to switch at the end of this month. I can't afford $65 per month at this point (Damn health insurance changing their formulary!). Back to the pill for me.
  • Dang! I pay 25 for mine from the student pharmacy. Looks like I will be filling my entire year prescription before I finish school!

  • Are there options I didn't consider?Mini-pill. It's progesterone only, so it doesn't cause migraines like progesterone/estrogen combination pills. The only thing is that you have to be 100% sure to take the mini pill at the same time every day because even 15 minutes difference can mean it won't work as well.If nuvaring doesn't work out, there's that. There's also a new implant (Norplant is the name of the old implant, I can't remember what the new one is called) which lasts 3 years, I think. But it's also a slow release of hormones.

  • I've used it for about 3 years now.  LOVE it.  I was horrible at remembering to take the stupid pill on the weekends when I didn't have my work calendar reminder to prompt me.  Sometimes it comes out during sex, sometimes it's in a weird position or angle and it hurts during sex, so we take it out.  I just put it back in afterwards, no biggie.  Otherwise I can't feel it, don't even know it's in there.
  • I used the ring when I was married before. I liked the convenience and the fact that it delivered the hormones directly where they needed to be; into the bloodstream via mucosal membranes. Reasoning behind it was a deluded desire to have kids.Of course, to be able to answer your sex question would imply that I was actually having it in my former marriage, and I didn't do this very often at all -  by my choice. ;)Which also means the above reasoning was fundamentally flawed.I'm on Seasonique now, to avoid problems I was beginning to have with regular b/c pills, namely clotting and unusual cramping (for lack of a better word - even sent me to the ER once). Of course, the $120 payment every 3 months sucks, but the light period once every 3 months is nice.

  • I've been on it for about two years and I really like it so far.FI either hasn't felt it, ir it hasn't bothered him enough to bring it up. I've never taken it out during sex, and it's never fallen out. Sometimes it tries to "get loose" but it's never been a problem.
Night swimming in the ocean= pretty sweet reception!
  • I was on it for three months, and it itched the entire time. I kept thinking that it was just my body getting used to it, but maybe I had some sort of allergy. Felt like a yeast infection. Condoms have never bothered me, but NuvaRing made me feel like what I imagine it's like to have a nasty STD. Ick.
  • I was on the Nuvaring, and I absolutely LOVED it. Didn't have to remember to take a pill every day, couldn't feel it when it was in, FI couldn't feel it in, and I didn't have the HORRIBLE mood swings that I had w/ the pill. I loved the thing, but like others it got too expensive once I lost the student discount...I just got health insurance again though, so I'll have to see how much it is these days! Best of luck with it!

  • Of course, the $120 payment every 3 months sucks, but the light period once every 3 months is nice. Oh yeah. I'm on Seasonale and I pay $145 every three months. Yay for my company switching to crappier health insurance, that doesn't cover BCPs!

  • Mine covers it. Its just the higher tier $40 a month payment since it isn't a preferred drug (and there are lower cost alternatives).  Yes, it's more than the generic $10 a month payment I was paying. But, it beats going to the ER thinking I had an ectopic pregnancy. I just need to remember to set aside $40 each month so I have it saved every 3rd month and it won't sting the pocket so much.I really love my insurance company.  My former plan (same company; different employer so different plan) sucked donkey balls. Their medication coverage is decent-very good; I pay $100 for a trip to the ER and $20 for a walk in clinic/specialist visit.  I just paid off a trip to the ER from over 2 years ago on my old insurance. Over $800 and that was MY part.

  • Mine covers the ER (I think my copay is $100) and my doctor copay is only $10 for my PCP. They just don't cover my BC. I'm on generic seasonale, actually, and it's still that much. But my company does have a flexible spending account system, so I just put a few hundred bucks a year on that so I can cover my prescriptions and doctors' visits. I get about $12 taken out of each paycheck, and it goes on a fancy debit card I can use at the pharmacy.
