Wedding Cake Help

I'm hoping to book in my wedding cake tastings when I'm back at Christmas, and here's the 3 I've narrowed it down to. - Mary Elliott - This is the e-mail I have for her.... can anyone confirm it's correct? tellgoofy5@comcast.net - Sugarbakers - Artistic Desserts Any other suggestions? Or advice to stay away? I'm looking for a great tasting cake with an elegant design - more focus on the taste. Wedding planning from another country is not nearly as fun as I thought it was going to be, but (stalking) this board has been such a great help!

I've heard great things about all those vendors on these boards. I'm a little different--my cake will be from Miss Nancy's Fancy Bakery in Annapolis. The owner is so so nice and the cakes. are. amazing (and reasonably priced). I've had the vanilla cakes with vanilla buttercream frosting for my birthday cake ever since I was two--except this year--and regular cake is definitely spoiled for me! The frosting looks like fondant it is spread so evenly. I'm more of a classic design person so I'm happy with the details they do just with frosting. Plus, she makes a ridiculous chocolate mousse cake too--I'm dreading having to pick a flavor.Sorry to get a little fklempt, but these cakes are the best I've ever eaten. (I sound like Mitch Hedberg http://tiny.cc/iN9u2ng>). But seriously, I called the day after I got engaged. Here's the website if you want to check the bakery out!http://tiny.cc/Vy0x1Good luck with your long distance planning!!~hPS--sorry about the weird formatting. I have no idea what's going on with that.

For great tasting - you may want to schedule at least a tasting with Patisserie Poupon. They aren't the cheapest, but the cake is ridiculously good. They are a typical french bakery, so they're a little snooty but they do beautiful work. For the tasting, they give you samples of 8 different kinds of cake and they are all delicious!FYI, their prices for sheet cake are significantly lower, so depending on your number of guests, you could do a "display" cake for a certain number and then supplement with a sheet cake and no one will know the difference.

Sugarbakers cakes are delicious, and we got 8 different ones to try at our tasting as well.  I don't really know anything about their prices because the cake is included with our catering, but I can vouch for the taste.  I know there are other Sugarbakers brides on this board that could answer specific questions you have.

I used Mary Elliott and she was so great to work with!  I found her prices to be a good bit cheaper than Sugarbakers when I checked them.  Once I tasted Mary's cake I didn't even go to another tasting.  She did a lot of intricate pipe work on my cake (you can look in my bio, go to married bio and non-pro pics).  It was delicious! That being said, she works from her home so only does a few cakes per weekend so book early :) And yes, that is the e-mail I used.

I loved Michael and the cakes from Artistic Desserts.  Michael went above and beyond for DH & I.  Example: our schedules were too crazy to get to him so he dropped off samples to my apartment in Baltimore.  He also had a convenient chat program so that you can have meetings online where you can click and drag pictures to show him what you are looking for.  Not to mention his cakes are the best I've ever tasted, and I'm not really a cake person.  Ok, enough gushing for one girl.  One caveat with Patisserie Poupon: my gf used them in August 2008 for her wedding.  The colors she was using were burnt orange and deep red, and they delivered her a cake with pink ribbon (pink was not in her contract, not in the inspiration picture she gave them, and not to mention, not anywhere in her wedding colors).  She is a better girl than I and just rolled with it.  But just a heads up to anyone considering them to be extra clear with what you want your cake to look like!

We just put a deposit down for our cake at Sugarbakers about a week ago.  We were very impressed with the quality of cake and their portfolio.  We got to try 12 different kinds of cake and they even gave us some free cake to take home that day.  Their customer service has been great and they also gave us a card for 10% off all future purchases.HTH!

I'm using Mary for our wedding and the tasting was delicious!! Because of the many other brides who used her I knew I would have to try and I am glad I did. Her portfolio is great. She has many pictures of cakes that I would choose as a design so I am more than comfortable with her. I also went to Sugarbakers because of all the rave and it is true their cakes are unbelievable but too far out of my budget. GL with your search and planning from out of the country!

Most of the hotels downtown contract with Sugar Bakers, so the cake comes included with the wedding package.  We did the cake tasting with our food tasting a few weeks ago and tried about 12 different types of cake.  They are more traditional in terms of choices (ie you aren't going to find anything like peanut butter or oreo), but all were delicious!

My sister used Sugarbakers and they were great.  We used Sweet (in Ellicott City).  The cake tasted great and they went above and beyond with the design.  Email me if you'd like to see a picture - smange5 at hotmail dot com

I loved Michael at Artistic Desserts. He nailed the look I was going for in regards to our wedding cake and the groom's cake he made was amazing too!! Taste-wise, his cakes are delicious. Best buttercream I have ever had. His customer service is outstanding!! Example, he thought he might need to use fondant instead of buttercream for some of the design work and I was concerned because I am a vegetarian and some fondants have animal products in them. He offered to fax me the label from the jar to show me it was vegetarian-friendly.

Ditto PP, Sugarbakers has more traditional flavors, but we're completely happy with the toasted coconut and rum frosting.  Yum!

Thanks so much for all the help! I e-mailed those 3 today, so hopefully I'll have responses by tomorrow morning. So excited to have another item ticked off the list.
