NWR - Acupuncture

Sorry about the NWR post, but I really need some perspective on acupuncture if anyone has any experience with it.  Have you ever tried it?  Did it help with its intended purpose?

I asked about this awhile back, for my mom when she had bells palsy.

There's a few recs that people gave.  Here's that thread.  Clicky!

Thanks for the link, Andrea!  I didn't remember seeing that post.

I'm looking to see one about very short mentrual cycles (18 days, most recently) and debilitating PMS.  I generally consider myself a very healthy person, but really need some help with this issue.  The person I'm going to see specializes in women's issues, but I'm pretty nervous about my appointment and am wondering if anyone has had acupuncture and what their experience has been.

    Oh no fun!  = (

Well, that thread probably won't be much help then, but maybe those ladies will let you know about their experiences.  My mom never ended up going, as it cleared up on it's own rather quickly.

I hope it works for you!

I'm sure googling for medical info is not the most reliable source for info... but maybe some of this might be relevant for you?  I have the opposite problem... mine are always ridiculously long and inconsistent due to having PCOS!  Taking metformin regularly helped normalize things for me.  I can't say that I've had any experience with acupuncture... but some of my coworkers have liked having it done to help with stress and headaches.

    From http://www.everydayhealth.com/pms/short-periods.aspx

"A short menstrual cycle could also be due to the birth control method you use. Some of the more contemporary methods, like the hormonal intrauterine device that a doctor implants in the uterus, are designed to suppress the growth of the uterine lining, thus decreasing flow level. This is considered an additional benefit of some types of birth control.

Low weight, excessive exercising, eating disorders, and stress may also impact the duration and frequency of your menstrual periods."

I used it for various odds and ends that weren't going right - planters faciatis (sp?), stomach problems that weren't super serious, etc.  I have found it works for me for muscle/tendon/ligament pain and only mixed results on tougher things like upset stomach.  But, that said, it is totally worth a try!  And give it a few tries because sometimes the treatments build on each other.  I went to Peoples Acupuncture in south Mpls and thought they were great and really, really reasonably priced.

    Good luck!

My mom had it done for her rheumatoid arthritis and saw great results with it. She pretty much does a combination of alternative and modern medicine and she's done really well.
