  I just learned about this yesterday!  They will send you back the pages of your passport but they are void.  Definitely be careful with it because it's proof of citizenship.  It's question 10 in the FAQ below... http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/faq/faq_1741.html

  Yes, you get your old passport back - but they punch a small hole in it and I beleive stamp "void" on it, so that you're no longer able to use it for travel purposes.

  Thanks everyone! I just hate having to mail it out and to not have a passport for a few weeks...I am definitely procrastinating this part of the name change.

  I had to give my passport up to get a Visa to go to Israel.  I've been without it for weeks and feel so trapped (even though I know I will get it back before we leave next week).  It's funny that even if you don't use it often, you don't want to part with it even for a short time.

  You read my mind!  I have the same question!How long does it typically take to get it back?  Also, can you do everything at the post office, or do you have to have the form ready and photos with you when you mail it out?  I'm nervous about putting it in the mail and then never seeing it again!  I have to travel and will need it in February - I may just pay to have it expedited.Any tips would be sooo appreciated!!

  I'm sad about this too... I've done a lot of travelling & will be back to a clean passport this month when I send everything in. You're not alone!

  Also in terms of cost, if you had a new passport issued within the past year it is free to have your name changed.  I had to renew my passport right before honeymoon in order to go and thought I was going to have to pay for it twice but I don't.  Just an FYI.
