who gets gratuities??

Who are the required/suggested people to tip? Photog? Reception site coordinator? DJ? Ceremony officiant? It's my first wedding (ha) and I have no clue how this stuff works! Thanks!!

    Pretty much everyone who did you a service...catering people, dj, photographer, etc....

    Look over your contracts carefully, there might already be a "service charge" or "gratuity" added to the bottom line.  Our venue is doing this with food & beverages so I wont be tipping any extra

    I think rule of thumb is that if they give you a service and they don't own their own company, you should tip them. We had a 22% service charge on our reception, so we didn't tip anything additional - all waitstaff, bartenders, busboys, etc were included in that 22%. Our DJ owned his own business, as did the photog. We didn't tip either of them since they got the whole fee to keep. The officiant in most cases should be tipped, we didn't tip ours because his fee was $375 and we thought that was super high and didn't need an additional tip on top of that. Other than that, you can tip the florist, cake person, etc. We did our own flowers and picked up the bouquet/corsages that the florist made, so we didn't tip them either (we would have tipped had they delivered and/or set up)

    tip whoever exceeded your expectations. i think after a DJ pays their insurance, equipment, backup equipment, and those high self employment taxes, that large fee you are thinking you are paying them, they arent really keeping it all. yes they probably make more than contractors but if they blew you away i think its still worth tipping any service regardless of how their business is set up. many stylists and makeup artists are independent and most brides tip them without thinking twice :)

    Also - a service charge is not necessarily a gratuity, so read your contract carefully.
