XP: DIY Magnetic Picture Puzzle STD

I posted this on DIY and got two helpful replies, but nothing else, so I figured some of you ladies are very crafty and I would get your opinions and advice!

We are doing a subtle game theme for the wedding - having Mad Libs at the tables for part of the guest book, probably naming tables after popular board games, having croquet and bocce and bean bag toss during cocktail hour on the grass.  Any other ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  The overall theme is 'antique garden party a la Great Gatspy' so we might bring in classic versions of games for various parts of the decorations (I should start hitting up yard sales for that stuff...note to self).  Maybe sometime game themed for the escort cards?

Anyway, we were thinking of doing our STDs as a puzzle (not complicated, like 6 pieces) and we were thinking how fun it would be if it were a magnet so they could assemble the puzzle on the fridge.  We want to DIY, and were looking at magnetic paper that you can print, except I'm afraid it will be too thin and curl up on the edges and look cheap.  So we were thinking of printing on high quality glossy paper and gluing it to a magnetic sheet and cutting it out by hand using a template.  It'll be an awful lot of work, but if it turns out really nice it'll be worth it.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Other ideas that might not require quite so many man hours and blisters on my hands from working the x-acto knife?

I think the last idea is certainly likely to look the best, but SO much work! Unless you're having a tiny wedding.

I did a quick google search and you can buy magnetic puzzles with photos on them, but they're kind of expensive... and I didn't look into it much.

That sounds really cute.  I thought I have seen puzzel magnets already cut and all you have to do is put the picture on it and then follow the lines with a knife and they just break apart pretty easy.  Check with a party store or somewhere like that.  They might even be able to print the picture on the magnet.

    C- Cute idea!

You can check out zazzle.com. They might be able to do the magnet for you and then you could cut it. How many are you going to do?

If it ends up being too much work, you could do an antique type Great Gatsby STD. By the way, I'm mildly obsessed with the Great Gatsby!

    I found these websites:

This one doesn't have the invite but it does have paper they typed on.

We have about 140 people invited, mostly in groupings of families.  While we'll send normal invitations to people over 18 years old, I don't think I'm going to bother with STDs for people within a family unit (for example, my cousins are 22 & 20 and will get their own invitations, especially as they're not living at home, but I will send one STD to their parents that says "The Smith Family").

So I'm estimating that I'll only have to do 60 or so maximum.  Which is still a ton if I'm doing all that work by hand.

Definitely a ton! Good for you. I hardly had the patience to print off escort cards and write names.

Have you checked on etsy? Maybe you could get some ideas there. That could also be expensive though.

I did check Etsy - they do magnets or they do puzzles, but no one does puzzle magnets.  It's going to be a lot of work, but oh well!  If I find out I hate it we can just do magnets.

When I was in the Navy, we had great big dry erase boards with little magnets that were shaped like our jets. We always used crainial tape (3M reflective super sticky stuff) and magnetic paper. I never had a problem with the edges curling or anything, and I used super sharp scissors instead of an exacto knife.

Do you want the puzzle pieces like on the picture? I generally don't like that, because it distorts the image. I made H a photo rubix cube (He loves to solve them) for Valentine's Day and it came out kind of strange looking.. I think it would be super cute to have like the pic of the 2 of you, and then have the actual date be the puzzle part (you'd have to make sure that none of the actual date and time were cut up so that it was distorted and then some one could get confused ya know?) My only concern is that the magnet paper is really expenisve, and with it being really time consuming also, it may be almost cheaper to order them.  Or!! You could order just regular STD magnets, and then turn them into puzzles yourself! Just make a master puzzle template, and then trace them on the back of the magnets (with like a silver sharpie so it'll show up on the back) and then cut them out yourself?

Idk.. What do you think? I'll think about it some more... HTH

I do like the idea of having the picture stand-alone and then the rest fit in like puzzle pieces!  And it might make sense to order them, but I think it would actually be cheaper to buy the magnetic material in bulk and stick on the photos.  But same concept... and less cutting if we're only doing 3 pieces to fit in!

    Like this (really rough draft):

I love the idea. The only issue I would see is time. My sugestion woul dbe if you have a friend that has a die cut machine. A lot of those can cut magnets especially the thin paper type. or it atleast gives you a way that once the image is attched to the magnet you could easily make uniform cuts and it would take a lot less time then hand cutting. I wouldn't get a machine just for this since they are around 100 give and take, but if you have one or a friend does I'd look into borrowing it or buying a cutter to fit for like 20 bucks and save yoruself the time of cutting out 120 of them. Good luck the theme sounds very fu I look forward to seeing what you end up with.
